Babies on the Brain

Ouch.

We went to Costco to stock up on all the things we would need for the next 2 months and spent $229 on food. Just food! I don't think I've ever spent that much all at one time. Plus, we will still have to buy perishables like milk and fruit. At least J will have what she needs for lunch. My head kind of exploded a bit at the register, even though I *knew* it would cost a lot.

Re: Ouch.

  • I spend that every time I go to Costco! I buy junk. We canceled Costco and went to BJ's

  • We typically spend $75 every 6 weeks or so. Mostly on lunch/breakfast food. I get a discounted membership through work, and we don't have BJs here.

It's a double edged sword, but we get most of our junk food free from MH's work. There are perks to being tops in the snack food world :)

  • Wow @bugandbibs, what is your secret? I feel like we spend $150+ a month on groceries for two.
  • I just got this new app called boxed. It is like Cosco but ships to your door, there is no membership fee and I think it even has free shipping. It might help you make less trips to the store as well. I haven't ordered anything from their but hope to when I finally concieve :) I hope this helps

  • $229 for 2 months worth of food sounds like a bargain to me.  Even w/out perishables!  We spend at least $100/week for the 2 of us.  However, we rarely dine out.

  • That's a little less than 29.00 a week.  Sounds like a deal.

  • We don't have kids yet but we spend a lot of food because we eat practically only whole foods. We go to Costco about twice a month and always spend around $150. Then we go to the farmers market every week for about $40, and Walmart for about $100. But we never go out to eat and we take all of our own lunches to work. From Costco we get vitamins, pet food (two big dogs and a cat), cat litter, toilet paper, paper towels, minced garlic, parmesan cheese, rice (we love the quinoa blend they sell), olive oil, grape seed oil, dish scrubber pads, laundry detergent, fruit, frozen chicken, salmon, and shrimp, and frozen stir fry. Kirkland brand toilet paper is pretty good and we love the laundry detergent tabs (knock off tide pods). We also use the Nature's Domain pet food and it is excellent for the price. Their gas is always cheaper than anyone else also. Then there are just random things that are always cheaper there - I just got a great deal on a new carpet shampooer and the optometrist is the cheapest anywhere. I am wearing Costco glasses right now lol

  • We spend around $800-$900 a month on groceries/household (toilet paper, etc.) for two adults. However, one of those adults is a man over six foot tall that works out for an hour a day and plays competitive sports, so the eats A LOT of food. About twice what I do. We save a bundle getting frozen chicken breasts and bulk fruit at Costco. But like I said, we never go out to eat or go out for lunch, we cook everything so I think we actually spend less than the majority of people.

WTF? I spent $185 at the supermarket for a week's worth of food for 3 people.  It's a miracle when I can get it below $150 for the week.  When I go to BJ's it's at least $300 for just pet stuff and paper goods for 2-3 months.

I'm doing something really, really wrong.

Nope, we spend about $100/ week for two of us. Plus DH spends $50/week eating lunch out (his lunch groceries would likely cost about the same if bought in the store) and that's not counting the money we spend eating out...

  • Wow!  You guys spend a lot!

Our grocery budget is about $250/month for the 4 of us.  I buy most of our fruits/veggies locally and I do a lot of canning.  We have a pretty big garden in the summer and fall.  I do coupon and try to meal plan based on what is on sale.

To be fair I had to buy gifts for the THREE birthday parties we are attending this weekend, plus some new tanks for me and I stocked up on granola bars (the fancy ones were on sale).

Maybe THAT is your super power. I don't think I've ever gone to Target and spent less than $50.
  • I'm pissed at Target and don't plan to spend $1 there for a long time

  • The whole compromised data crap. We have a red card. They were less than helpful with our request to get a new card. I was shocked at their lack customer service. And their return policy sucks

Fair enough. The data issue is huge, especially after the issue they had a couple of years ago. I had so many problems with my first online order there that I've never placed another. We don't have any accounts with them because I don't trust their security.

We have a similar budget as @bugsandbibs . $230 a month on food groceries for the 4 of us. I shop at aldis, we garden and we get our own meat.

I apparently need to hang out here more. My grocery budget is the same for four (though we recently had to bump it up about $20 for all of dds supplements) and I've think I've been called out as either lying or feeding my kids Mac and cheese everyday. :)
