High-Risk Pregnancy

My bedtime GD snack

Probably a silly question, but my bedtime snack seems to good to be true.  One night I was craving cereal big time, the yummy sugary kind (lucky charms or capt crunch with crunch berries)  I was scared, but the next day my fasting numbers were fine (I'm on insulin before dinner and before breakfast).  So it's become my staple snack at night.  I don't even measure, just dump it in a bowl so it's probably like two servings, plus the milk....it really shouldn't work for me, but it does.  My fasting numbers are usually right around 85 (need to be 95 or below) and I still haven't gained any weight this pregnancy....but I can't get rid of that nagging feeling that I'm somehow hurting myself by eating that.  But if my numbers are good, I shouldn't worry, right?

Re: My bedtime GD snack

  • Whenever I ate a snack I wasn't sure of I would test my blood an hour after, like a meal. That's the only real way to know. Even though your sugars are fie in the morning they could still be spiking after the snack and you just don't know. Probably not what you wanted to hear, I know. But as soon as that baby's out, everything's fair game again!

  • Yup - what @KTZ17 said. There is a lot of time for things to even out between bed time snack and getting your fasting numbers. Maybe the insulin is taking care of it, but you could still be spiking and coming down. I hate hate hate having to eat a bedtime snack. Eating a corn tortilla and cheese is the last thing I want to do before going to bed. But, if it is what is best for the kid, I will suck it up.

It sounds like our docs have many different recommendations for managing GD. My list of rules says not to eat any food with any type of sugar listed in the first 4 ingredients for any meal or snack. So, its a food that I would pine for, but wouldn't likely consume. :(
