Snacks for Visitors?

I'm due tomorrow and we are not allowing visitors in the hospital so we expect a lot of people to drop by the house in the next few weeks. I want to have something small to offer guests (not looking to be Martha Stewart but I can't have people at my house without offering them something). What are some easy things that will last a few days/a week that I can pull out when people stop by? Im thinking tea, coffee, juice water which we already have anyway but what about food? Should I do cheese? Fruit? Cookies and pastries? Again, nothing that takes a ton of effort or requires a lot of clean up but just something to offer.

I would not worry about food at all. People who are coming to see baby should not expect you to play hostess. I think the drinks you already have on hand will be more than enough.

This exactly. If they expect food too bad. They should've eaten beforehand.

  • This never even crossed my mind with DS. After birth/major surgery, you have enough to worry about! I have a Keurig so coffee is easy enough but if you come to my house hungry, there's a strip mall not too far away... I'm normally pretty hospitable, just not when I am bleeding, leaking milk, and hormonal.

  • I wouldn't offer anything but a drink but if you must I guess cookies are good to offer. If anything they will probably bring something for you, that's what I do.

That being said we just got back from a Costco run where I bought chocolate almonds, pretzels, water, mozzarella sticks, pizza bites, pistachios, chocolate raisins, and lots of more junk food  so I have plenty of things to snack on once DS gets here.

I plan on sharing my stash with no one!!!

If you are planning on BFing you most likely will feel ravenous the first couple weeks. It is always good to have snacks on hand :)

ETA: ::sighs:: If you want to be nice and stock up on snacks for yourself, I suppose you could always offer them to your guests ;)

  • They should bring the snacks.  I think having some beverages for them to drink is plenty.

  • I always like to offer guests something to eat. I realize that they may not expect it, but I expect it of myself. Trader Joes has some nice scones, croissants and cookies that are frozen and very easy to put on a cookie sheet and bake.

  • I'm making pretty educated assumptions here, but I think setting out snacks for visitors will be the last thing on your mind after getting home. I understand your desire to want to do that and it is very considerate, but I highly doubt anyone expects you to make them comfortable when they come to visit. They should be thinking of what to bring and offer you as the new mom!
  • It is a nice sentiment, but you do not need to offer food/drinks/snacks. If people want to come to the house to see baby they shouldn't expect more than a "glasses are in that cabinet and water is in the fridge".
  • I say cookies. And if they don't eat them, you can! :P

  • I wouldn't. Many times visitors bring food for you. If you feel you MUST, it shouldn't be hard for DH to make a grocery store run ad pick up a premade veggie, fruit, or cheese/crackers tray and grab a gallon or two of sweet tea.
  • In my previous experience when people would come over to visit me and baby they brought food/snacks/meals with them to offer to us.  I was that way with DD#1 and never really got an opportunity to provide it to visitors.

  • I wanted all my visitors before and after baby (except my mom) to take a hike. Food would just encourage them to stay longer.

  • Pregnant with #4 here...

All I've offered was bottled water. It's a nice way to keep people from staying too long. If they came around supper time, DH would give them cash and say, Bring us back some McDonalds, here's our order.

  • I'm on the same page as you @rcultrona, I feel like I have to have a *little* something in the house.  (I am so my mother's daughter...gah!) I'm going to the store tonight and I'll get meat/cheese/crackers to put out and I'll make sure I have some chips/dip and cookies on hand as well.  Again, nothing crazy but something to nibble on if I have someone over for an extended period of time.

  • I'm Latina so for us it's rude to go to someone's house empty handed. I always have coffee, tea and other drinks but that's all you're getting. There's a Panera down the street so feel free to bring over a pastry ring!

  • No offense intended to you, this is just my personal opinion...

    Eff. That. Noise.
  • If anything, I would think they should be bringing something for you! One of the best pieces of advice I received early on was to tell people to bring food when they ask what they can do. Come to think of it, it was advice to Daphne Oz on the Chew when she announced her pregnancy lol
