Success after IF

Help Me Feed my Baby :)

So we took LO for her 9 month appointment yesterday and the Dr. said more real foods - less purees (not a huge surprise).....  but yet again, I am clueless!

He gave us the "she eats what you eat" shpeal - but so much of what we eat seems like it is not soft enough for her....

Soooooo, can you ladies help me out? I need some suggestions.

Obviously I know I can do mushy, overcooked pasta..... but I also have an entire butternut squash sitting in my fridge that I know can be cooked for her, but I don't know the best way to do it.....

I would love to hear some feedback from others :)

  • I take a lot of regular dishes and blend it up. It can still be smoth with some chunks or chunkier until she is ready for really chunky food.

  • ^ this. As for the butternut squash, you can cut it into chunks and steam it (or of course purée it), or make risotto with it.

  • Frozen, diced veggies are my besties. So easy to heat up. We do cut up lunch meats and string cheese a lot for lunch. Diced avocados and softer fruits (pears, peaches, apricots...). Toast with purees on it are always great to sneak in a veggie or fruit. Pasta with shredded cheese was a hit then as well.

The Wholesome Baby Food website has some great ideas as well. HTH!

  • DS loves the butternut squash roasted and then cubed, he actually prefers a lot of his veggies roasted.

I tried to feed DS what we were eating as much as I could, but like you said, there are some things he just couldn't eat, like he's not going to start gnawing on a steak!  But if we were having something like chicken noodle soup - I'd drain the liquid and give him all the good stuff, the veggies and noodles are super soft in soup.  Or tacos, I'd give him ground turkey, shredded cheese, avocado, chopped tomatoes and little pieces of tortilla.

He ate a lot of shredded chicken and overcooked broccoli (he liked to hold the steam and bite off the tops).  There are also a lot of really good baby muffin, pancake and meatball recipes out there.  I found a ton when I was trying to use up rice cereal and oatmeal.  These were great because you can make a lot and freeze it for the nights you can't feed your LO what you are eating.

I agree about the Wholesome Baby Food website and here is a pretty good list of finger foods, too:

  • E is really into beans right now, which is good since she isn't so into meat. We do cannellini beans or chick peas and she gobbles them up. Chick peas you might want to smoosh a little the first time since they are so round, but E never had any issue.

  • @ccam- thanks for that link to your kids table. I bookmarked that.

Appreciate all the help ladies. For some reason food is always overwhelming to me until I find my groove. I know for a fact if you go back 3 months you would find a similiar post to me when we started purees. Hard to believe we're moving away from that already!

  • It may take your LO a while to get used to the solids texture.  You may want to try chunky puree (or fork mashed) for a bit to get her used to the new texture, esp if you have been feeding her smooth purees.

Roasted veggies, overcooked (ie, boiled to death) carrots & broccoli are good things to start.  FWIW, M like sauteed greens.  He eats garlic sauteed spinach or watercress like there is no tomorrow.  I use kitchen shears to cut snip the veggies so they aren't too long and stringy.

Overcooked pasta, asian noodles are also M's favorites.  He likes pan-fried firm tofu, or shredded chicken (I poach chicken thighs so they are moist and tender).

this is exactly how we started out, then little by little we just handed them breads or crackers and they got used to texture and now can eat just about anything

  • cube your squash and cover it with olive oil, crushed garlic, and bread crumbs and roast at 375 it till mushy (stir around every 10 min or so). This was one of my son's first loves. Sadly now, he is less enthusiastic as it is neither carb nor meat :)

Check out some of the recipes on Wholesome Baby Food dot com. DS loved the turkey meatballs and the broccoli cheese bites. He also loved beans. At the beginning we would smash each one a little with our fingers to help him get started. Mandarin oranges are great too. (Make sure they aren't in syrup.)
