Horrible sinus infection ... what can I do?

I've been fighting this for a week and it's gotten to the point where it's super painful to bend over or lie down. I tried using a netti pot when I had a sinus infection before and it was a BAD idea. Last night (at 3 am) I tried bending over a bowl of hot, steaming water with a towel over my head, and it helped a bit while I was doing it but not by the time I got back upstairs to bed. I've also been taking fenugreek in the hopes it will thin the mucus.

I have a bottle of phenylephrine, which is labeled as "moderately safe" on Kellymom--there's a possibility it could affect supply. I guess I could try a nasal spray but because the congestion is all throughout my sinuses (including ears)--would it work for that?

I am exhausted and run down and desperate for some relief! Open to anything that can reasonably be done while nursing twins and chasing a toddler around the house.

Re: Horrible sinus infection ... what can I do?

  • Yes, get to your dr for antibiotics! I have had 3 sinus infections since Sept thanks to colds from my grubby daycare baby. I'm not usually the type to run in for an rx but antibiotics were the only thing that really helped. Hot showers, using a humidifier and ibuprofen helped a bit. The neti pot really only works if your nose is not completely blocked. Hope you feel better soon!

  • You might want to try eating raw garlic or taking a garlic supplement as well. Always helps me!

  • I recently had a bad head cold.  I used phenylephrine for a couple weeks but when that didn't work I went for the Afrin and that really helped.  Neither affected my supply, but every person is different.
  • Breathe Right strips!!! They are my life saver!!
