Anyone have any experience with St. Elizabeth's in Brighton?

I just found out that my Dr. that I adore is moving over to that hospital from BI. I don't have any kids yet, and am only 9w along following a MMC in Sept. This dr. was above and beyond supportive during the m/c, performed my D&C and also performed a cyst and fibroid removal for me a few years back. She had been absolutely fabulous, and I've been traveling over an hour to see her because she's the only doctor I've ever trusted to this extent.

Anyhow, we are exploring options but does anyone have experience with labor and delivery at this hospital?

  • I don't have any personal experience. All I know is through my friend who delivered there and she said she definitely felt a bit "bullied" into doing things she wasn't sure she wanted to do. Again, this was just her experience.
  • The hospital itself doesn't have a great reputation, although your dr may be awesome.

  • I delivered at St. E's, its the only hospital my doctor delivers at, and I love him so I wasn't willing to make the switch. My experience was ok, my sister in law delivered there and loved it. I delivered 12/21/12 and apparently all the beds were full, so instead of being moved to the recovery floor we had to stay on the labor and delivery floor, with our LO in the nursery on a separate floor. When we went on our hospital tour I asked what happened if they were full, they replied that never has happened, yeah right!
This was my first, so my husband had to remind a few nurses to take it easy on me, they were sometimes very harsh and lacked bed side manner, but the nurse who delivered was AMAZING.
The food is AWFUL, I sent my husband to the green briar pub to get take out every night, it was our favorite place when we lived in the city!
Overall you will be in good hands and the staff knows what they are doing.

  • I'm a little late, but I had my DD here last fall. We had a great experience and I ended up being there for almost a week with high blood pressure. Ended up delivering vaginally 36 hours after my water broke. My delivery nurse was amazing and I love her still. Some of the recovery nurses were a bit lacking in bedside manor, but they leave you alone so that was fine. The lactation consultants are bullies, but they ALL are at every hospital. Overall I feel I had great care and my daughter is very healthy.
  • I loved St E's. My delivery nurse was fantastic (her name is Kate). I hadn't initially wanted an Epi, but had a terrible reaction to the pain if labor (intractable vomiting, near passing out) the anesthesiologist was in my room within 5 minutes of me asking for her. We had mecunioum in the water and the NICU team was there in about 10 minutes of discovery. They bent the rules a bit and let me have more than 2 people in the room for the majority if labor.

Post delivery, The food was good, they left me alone but responded when I asked for them. They didn't push either rooming-in or sending the baby to the nursery at night totally let me decide. They gave me a single (usually for c-sections though I was a vaginal delivery). Hub slept on a cot, which they had set up for us when we got down to the floor even though it was 3am!

I do not have experience delivering there, BUT my sister was there just last semester for her clinicals in L&D (she is a nursing student at UMASS). Although the hospital itself has bad rep  (she was also there as a patient for a couple of times and really hated it comparing to BI or BWH), the L&D department is not considered horrible in the medical community. Her professors spoke really highly of the doctors there, and she had the opportunity to meet and be taught by well known professionals in the field.
Hope knowing that the medical staff is pretty good there puts your mind at ease.
