worry about reverse cycling?

LO is 12 weeks and started daycare Wednesday, home sick with DH Monday and Tuesday. She has taken bottles before no issue.

On Monday he forced two ounces (almost had to use syringe) on Tuesday, 3 oz. The laat two days have been better but she's only taken 8 oz total. I feed her at 5:30 and she hasn't eaten the first bottle until 10! DCP says she doesn't cry or even act hungry, she just offers because she knows it's been too long. She takes the second bottle at 3 which is 5 hours later!

She comes home and nurses a ton, but because she's so young, I worry this isn't good for her to be going so long. She's a big girl and was close to 15 lbs at her urgent care visit Sunday. Should I try to get her in for a weight check? Her diapers have been on the low range of normal. Maybe 6 a day?

Re: worry about reverse cycling?

  • If she is nursing the whole time she is with you, including through the night, then she is most likely fine.  I mean you wouldn't worry if she was going 8+ hours at night without eating, right?  And she is eating some while at daycare.  As long as she continues to reverse cycle, she's getting what she needs.

What time do you actually drop her off at daycare?  I would nurse her right before drop off again - so you've nursed her once when she wakes and then right at drop off.

A weight check isn't a good way to see what baby is getting because babies don't grow at a steady rate.  You'd need weighed feedings for that.

Oh and I don't know how long you are at work but 8 oz is likely just fine.  The average is an ounce for every hour baby is away - even if you are gone 10-12 hours that's not far off average and can easily be made up for by the reverse cycling.

  • Thanks, ncbelle. I can't nurse at drop off because DH does it. I try to nurse at pickup and she snacks but won't take a full meal for an hour or so after we get home. I'm away from her 11 hours. I was logically telling myself not to worry because it would be NBD if she were sleeping. I guess I will not worry and enjoy my ever growing freezer stash.

  • I work weekends and my baby suddenly stopped taking a bottle from my husband. He figured out that he would take it if he was in his swing only for some reason. Maybe they can try a different position?
