Question about giving formula to a EBF baby

Hi. I have gotten myself into a bit of a pickle- without giving too many details I have to leave my 6 month old DD with my MIL for an emergency work situation tomorrow. My entire frozen supply is at my regular childcare providers house. So I am trying to pump as much as I can but don't think I can make up what I need in enough time. Can I have my mil give her formula? Do I need to talk to my pedi about this?

And retrieving my frozen stash or bringing DD with me is not an option due to a long commute. Thanks

Re: Question about giving formula to a EBF baby

  • Of course your MIL can give her formula, but there's a chance she'll reject it.

  • Yes sorry that sounded stupid. I know I can give her formula but I don't know if babies usually reject it at first? Or if there is an adjustment period? Will it mess up her digestion temporarily? I am a FTM so sorry if these questions are really silly

  • Many babies have an adjustment period, some don't. Some flat out refuse
it, some couldn't care less. Sometimes the change can cause
constipation/tummy upset, but sometimes it doesn't. It really varies
baby to baby and there isn't any way to predict how your LO will do
unfortunately. The important thing is that you feed your baby one way or
another. Is your LO on solids yet? How big is the discrepancy between
what you will have pumped and what your LO eats? Are you planning on
getting up MOTN to pump also?

Many EBF babies refuse to eat at all
during the day and end up reverse cycling (eating more in the evening
and at night to make up the daytime calories). My best suggestion is to
have your MIL feed the baby best she can tomorrow and plan on some
cluster feeding tomorrow evening. Your baby will be okay. In real life
things don't always work out the way we want them to. Its good your baby
is 6 months old and not a newborn. Just keep this incident in mind and
keep at least a days worth of frozen BM at home in case this happens
again. Try not to beat yourself up over something you can't do anything
    about.

    Thanks for the advice
  • I'm sorry to hear you're in this situation.  Your baby might have no problem at all.  Or LO might reject it or throw it up or become constipated.  There's no way to know since LO's never had that formula.  The good news is, though, that in the end LO should be fine.  All of those are temporary, if unpleasant.  Unfortunately your MIL might be in for a long day with a very cranky baby.
  • We had to give LO some formula and I mixed the little bm I could pump with the formula. She did fine with it and I feel like mixing it helped her digest it easier.
