Cloth Diapering

Used GMD prefolds

I've found some used GMD prefolds for sale on kijiji for $20 per dozen. The seller has 12 newborn and 12 small available, only one has a stain.

I know GMD sells new ones of that size for $25 and $29 per dozen, but given the exchange rate and shipping costs, it seems like a pretty good deal for prefolds, although these are used. The best price I can find on any prefolds online and shipped to Canada is about $2.25 per prefold for newborn size for Sweetpea brand.

I asked the seller about her washing routine and she said she used Free and Clear for all of them, I'm assuming she meant Tide.

Does this seem like a good deal? GMD seem like a good brand that would stand the test of time.

Thanks!

Re: Used GMD prefolds

  • Does it include shipping? It sounds good to me as long as you've seen pictures. Also, I wouldn't necessarily assume that Free & Clear means Tide. I used All F&C until I knew better. Thankfully, I've read that prefolds are super forgiving, so I wouldn't stress if it wasn't necessarily a cloth-safe detergent. They might need a hot water strip or boiling if there is detergent build-up, but that's NBD.

  • I would pick them up from her, no shipping needed :)

She posted a picture and only one diaper has a stain.

She said she would give me all 24 for $30. I think I need to jump at this deal.

  • Yep.  Sounds like a good deal to me.  I think I'd at least run a wash with 1/4 bleach and then do a few hot water washes to kill any bacteria/yeast issues she may have had.  Great find!  Lucky you!

  • At $30, absolutely get them!

Prefolds are very forgiving, so don't stress about what detergent she used to wash them. You found yourself a fantastic deal.

I have a top-loader, do you think I can strip all 24 in one load? They are newborn and smalls so I can't imagine it would even half-fill the tub of my machine. I'm just building my stash now, so I haven't even thought about prepping yet.

  • Yep strip them all at once. You should easily be able to so 20 OS pockets/ AIOs at once. So I think 24 NB/small would be fine.

Thanks everyone! The woman selling them had 24 of like every size, so I bought 24 newborn size for $30 to get my newborn stash to over 36 changes. I checked them all over and everything was in really good condition.

I figure I am still starting my OS/larger size stash I would hold off on the small and medium sizes for now, to see how we like prefold vs. the flats and fitteds we already have purchased new.

I haven't had my baby shower yet and I registered for a lot of cloth diaper stuff, so I will start stripping and prepping everything once that happens. I really appreciate everyone's help!
