Detoxing from Facebook

I'm stepping away from FB for the rest of this month.  Maybe it's just my circle of people, but there are too many "show off" posts and TMI.  One's personal life is no longer personal.  Who really wants to see you dancing in your new pair of long johns?

I will weekly check my closed moms' group page and my YMCA fan page, but other than that, I'm totally over it.  Anyone else?

Re: Detoxing from Facebook

  • No, I love FB :) I probably always will.

That said, I can be a wench. I WILL delete people I don't care for, or annoy me. Or I block them so their crud isn't on my feed.  Because of that, I actually find mine rather enjoyable :)  A lot of my close friends live far away now, so I enjoy it so I can keep up with them.

  • Kind of like the discussion in the other thread, most of my FB feed is older (35+) and I really don't see much TMI. Except from a dad going through potty training...

And whatever it means, the people in my feed are always far more likely to be complaining about their lives than bragging.

The political rants get old for me. I spend a lot of time following the news etc but I hate rants.

Mostly I want to spend less time on there because it is just such a time suck and nothing to show for it. I'm getting concerned about my attention span. And I'm reading less and less, which is a huge thing. I used to pass 100 books a year and a zillion magazines effortlessly.

  • My friends list is really small. If i don't talk to you on the regular you don't make the cut. Also a lot of them are my relatives from out of state, and its a great way to keep them updated on DS.
  • I have almost everyone hidden except for about 7 people and the news and shopping pages that I like. It makes the experience much better.

  • I toon a fb vacation for a few months last year. It took about a week or so not want to check in on it. I use it now mostly for groups. I also unfriend people when they annoy me. Fb is never get me riled up.

  • We live so far from family so I can't step away but I did make a "family" group and most of my posts/photos are only viewable to them.
  • I get on fb daily, but I don't use it for facebooking. My local mom's group is set up through fb, so I'm on that. I may have a slight addiction to getting on there. But I very rarely post things to my own wall and I only sometimes scroll though my newsfeed.

I currently have 108 friends, and there's only like 3 people on there I want to prune but haven't. Ok more if you include family, but I'm not about to cause that drama. My 20 year old sister, on the other hand, friends every single person she comes in contact with. She went to disney, decided the guy working one of the rides was cool, and friended him. She's at 602 at the moment; I'm sure that will go up tomorrow.

  • I block people who would be too much drama to unfriend.

I'd really like to take a Facebook vacation for a bit.  First, because it is a time suck and I could be reading a book (or, let's be honest, a trashy magazine) instead.  Second, because I find myself comparing L to other babies/toddlers ("Wait, he can't do THAT yet!") and that's unhelpful because he is working really hard and has come a long way.
