Babies: 0 - 3 Months

6 wk old-when does it get better?

My LO is currently 6 weeks old. I see him becoming more alert, smiling and cooing-which makes me look forward to more of that! But 10-20 mins after being up he freaks out, screams and stretches his body out and tightens it. It's like dr Jekly and me Hyde....especially between 8-10pm. I know this is bc he is overstimulated/overtired. It takes 20-30 mins of rocking and screaming outbursts just to get him to sleep. Then he might wake up 5 mins after that and I have to do it all over again!! My patience is gone by then. When does this tough part stop and my little man is up more as a happy baby?? Anyone else experiencing the same??

  • I cant comment on when it may get better, but just want to assure you that youre absolutely not alone. DD is 6wk old too and I spend many hours a day shh-ing, singling, carrying, cuddling, etc- anything to help her through her tantrums. I feel like if she is not nursing then Ive got about 5-10 min before she erupts into screams and cries. Really looking for the light at the end of this loud, frustrating tunnel!

  • It also sounds like your LO could have some tummy issues?! Gas? Colic? Have you tried Colic Calm or gas drops?

  • The 6 week growth spurt was tough. It gets better. I can't tell you when cause its different for every babe, but it does get better! You might try adding some gas drops to LO's bottles or giving before breastfeeding, cause what you describe sounds a bit like gas pains. And if this has been going on for a few weeks it may be time to see the Pedi to rule out any health issues.

  • Google "The Period of Purple Crying". Its totally normal and peaks at about 6 weeks. Hang in there, it will pass soon!
  • I went through the same thing.  My son is three months old now and I see a DRASTIC difference in his personality.  He was the same exact way up to about two months and I did not see a light at the end of the tunnel!  I promise it does get better and from talking to my friends with older babies, it gets even better from here too.  Hang in there, you're not alone...just continue what you're doing!

  • That sounds like colic... 8-10pm. My daughter had it like clockwork nightly.... for weeks. Gripe water, lots of bouncing, cuddles and the kitchen fan noise, and we swapped her formula and everything changed.
  • What formula did you end up using?
  • Sounds like his tummy hurts. I'd let your pedi in on it.

  • We can't tell you. It's individual.
