Hello! and.. question about first pp period.

Hi! My name is Kelsey.

I have never been on this board, but my DS was born on March 08, 2013. He is first lo. I think that someone on here may be able to give some advice or tell their experience since I nurse on demand, and co-sleep. My son prefers to sometimes nurse over eating solids also, I plan to let him take the lead and nurse him for an extended time. Some background info is that I exclusively breastfed him until about 8 months and now at 10 months he eats solids twice a day and breastfeeds in between and on demand, at night he also gets thirsty I think and so I nurse him once or twice for a few minutes, he sometimes dozes off and sometimes he nurses for a full feeding. Four days ago I started to spot light brown, and it turned to dark brown with a hint of red every once in awhile. I didn't have to change a pad for a whole day. It is completely gone today. I am wondering if I should consider this my first pp period? Or is it just spotting? I have not spotted AT ALL, no signs of aunt flow what soever until now and we haven't changed anything in our breastfeeding not-so schedule schedule (he gets as much as he wants, which hasn't been less lately or anything like that.) I am wanting to somewhat keep track of AF once it does come to prepare for TTC #2.
I know experiences can vary, and so I am just wondering if any of you ladies have had a similar experience or knowledge? TIA!

Re: Hello! and.. question about first pp period.

  • I've just gotten my 2nd PP period, and they've both been like what you describe. DD is 7 months, was EBF, and is just now incorporating some solids (but still getting all of her real calories from BM).

  • It's likely that this was your first PP period. You could begin tracking your BBT (I recommend fertilityfriend.com for charting) to detect whether or not you're ovulating.

Your first few PP cycles may be very long, or they might go back to normal fairly quickly.

Here is some more information about breastfeeding and returning fertility:

  • Thank you! I will check out those sites for sure. :)
  • Hey! My LO was born Mar. 7! I had some spotting randomly a couple times before I had a real period-like period. So, I guess I'm no help really because I'm not TTC or anything so I didn't really care either way (except that I was kind of annoyed to get a period this early on while I'm still nursing around the clock!)

Right? How is that fair?? I got it at almost exactly 6m PP, and I distinctly remember nursing every 2 hours - even at night - that week. Womp.

  • I am new to message boards and so not familiar with how to add your comments to my posts lol but yes that is very unfair! I am hoping it will be inconstant for the next few months. And I am not TTC currently, but possibly once DS turns about one. :)  Thank you ladies. ;p

  • My ds2 was born 3/8/13 also.  So far, I have not seen a trace of AF and I'm not complaining one bit.  We were not planning to have ds2 and we definitely won't be trying for one after him.  Since I am 43, I joked with Dh that if I hit menopause while nursing ds2, I really wouldn't object.
