Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4mth sleep regression

The four month sleep regression is HORRIBLE.

Is there any help to get through this? DD was an awesome sleeper before.. then about two weeks ago had a bad night here and there.. around that time she also became VERY difficult to get to nap! At nap time she SCREAMS if you try and help her get to sleep (swaddle, rock, swing, nurse, paci) BUT you can tell she desperately needs the sleep! About a week ago her God mother came for a visit and DD got handed to her as usual, but not normal for her she immediately began to cry. And now we are three nights into every hour wake up calls :( I'm EXHAUSTED and of course the exhaustion brings on the crying (myself not DD) and just makes everything else that much harder.

She's 16 and a 1/2 weeks, seems a little early for this but I know all babies are different.
How long (in your experience) did it take for baby to get past this regression?
Was there anything you did during this phase that you thought helped?
Once LO's get beyond the regression do they go back to how they were sleeping or is it generally better sleeping afterwards?

Thanks all - just need some support to get through this little doozie! Also have in-laws staying with us this weekend...

  • To answer your questions:
--it's individual. DS had 2 weeks. DD had a week.

--it's my experience that sleep is worse afterward. It rarely goes back to pre-regression rate.

--the only that helped is reminding myself it won't last forever. There is a 6 month regression as well.

Babies gonna baby. Ride it out.

  • Adjust your expectations?

Consider all of the changes kiddos go through in the first couple years of life. Their sleep patterns are going to change as well. The only constant with kids is that they're unpredictable.

  • Going through the same thing myself. My baby is almost 15 weeks old and she refuses to nap most of the day. It is a battle to get her to nap I'm exhausted she used to be a fantastic sleeper. I'm exhausted from being up at night and really need her to nap so I can recharge a bit so I feel your pain believe me. I too am hoping this doesn't last too long.
  • I am dealing with the same thing. I have been miserable. I have been sleeping during her naps and I will also get a little workout in during the day. It helps boost my energy.

  • Hang in there.... it does get better.

  • Good luck and I hope you feel a little better tomorrow.  We've been going through this for a few weeks.  By the morning I feel like death warmed over.  But then DS smiles and is just so darn cute and doing so many funny things now that I somehow forget how exhausted I am during the day.  Of course, I also chug caffeine all day long so maybe that's the secret?  Enjoy the good times, try to black out the bad parts, and it will all be better eventually :)
  • We've been in it over a month at least, I think stopping trying to fix it is probably the best advice. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure them out:)
