Dropping a feeding

C is a little over 8 months and within the last week or so has really gotten good at eating solids (BLW). She ate half an avocado and a slice of tomato for lunch today, which is a lot of food for a little goober.

She seems to be moving towards dropping a nursing session in favor of solids. This is also coinciding with her moving from 3 to 2 naps. I nurse her to sleep for naps so those are her best feedings because she is so distracted during the day.

She nurses well on and off from about 4 am until we wake at 6, a quick feeding at 8 (less than 5 mins) then a good feeding before/during nap from 9-10 or so. She might nurse for a minute between 10 and her next nap at 1-3 (she'll nurse on and off for this nap too) then maybe another minute before dinner at 5. Then she nurses to sleep at 6:30 or so. Then 1-2 snack nurses MOTN. It's about 4 solid sessions with 6-8 total including the really short ones. She used to have one more good feeding when she took three naps.

Does this sound ok? Is it ok at this age for her to be replacing a feeding with solids? I assume its the natural progression of things but I know BM should be the mainstay of her diet until 1. And I hope to keep it up longer than that :)

Re: Dropping a feeding

  • I think it's fine.  I nurse on schedule instead of on demand.  I was nursing DS 8x/d when he was taking 3 naps a day (am/pm, before/after each nap).  When he went down to 2 naps a day at 8m, I dropped him to 6x/d and he didn't miss it at all.
