Vent - Bosses Big Mouth

I'm so frustrated right now!  I told my boss on Monday that I was pregnant; decided it was time because I have a pretty demanding job and with my fatigue and morning sickness wanted to cover my butt.  HR has been aware since I was around 7 weeks too for my protection.  Well I just had another manager walk into my office and congratulate me, I have not told anyone outside of my direct supervisor. Come to find out he decided to share my news in his management meeting with the two practice managers, who mind you have zero association to me or my job. I don't report to them and we are technically lateral.  Same manager completely different jobs and organizational line.  Should I be annoyed or am I overreacting?

Re: Vent - Bosses Big Mouth

  • Did you specifically ask him not to say anything?  If so, then yes, you have a right to be annoyed.  If not, he may not have realized this was private information.

I told one boss early on, but swore her to secrecy and she did not tell anyone.

  • Yeah I told him I wasn't planning to share with anyone else for awhile, that I just wanted him to be made aware. So it was made clear that it was an employee-supervisor discussion only.

  • I can see why you would be frustrated as I too wouldn't be pleased if my pregnancy was announced in a meeting. Are you not telling anyone right now and did your boss know that? When I was expecting I made it clear that I wasn't telling anyone (due to a previous loss) to make sure they weren't telling anyone else.

  • Crystal clear lol.  I don't even know what to think right now, it takes a lot to make me mad.  It's going to spread like wildfire which I told him I wasn't ready for especially because I work in a male dominated office, there's only about 15% women.  He knew this was something that only him and HR had been informed of and told I would share with others when I was ready.

  • Yes, I'd be annoyed.  I'd also probably just do my best to forget about it; unfortunately, it can't be undone.  If you find that he begins to treat you differently because of your pregnancy, I'd keep a record of your conversations (specific dates, times, people, words as close as you can remember them) just in case.

    Sorry.  :(
  • I would be annoyed, but this kind of situation is once of the reasons that I don't share pregnancy news until it is absolutely unavoidable.

  • You asked him to be discrete and keep a piece of personal information you shared with him on the record confidentail, and he didn't respect your request. You have every right to be annoyed.

    I'm sorry :(

  • I would address him via email about it as professional as possible and also cc: the hr person you informed. You may need documentation in the future since clearly he cannot be trusted.
