36 week appointment question

Did you all have an U/S to check baby's growth and/or position (breech, head down, etc). I know I'll be getting the Strep B swab and she'll check my cervix for sure.

Just curious! I think I remember at this point with DS having another U/S to see how big he was and check his measurements but I am not sure. I haven't had an u/s since the anatomy scan at 19 wks.

TIA

Re: 36 week appointment question

  • Not with #1, haven't had that appt yet this go around but I don't believe I will since it's the same practice.

  • I don't think you'll have one unless you're measurning small or they're worried about something.

I had one with DD at 36 weeks but it was because my BP was high and they were considering inducing. I think as long as you're healthy you probably wont get one. I haven't had one since my anatomy scan at 18 weeks.

I'm sure this varies from doctor to doctor.

  • I'm only 33 weeks, but at my last appointment my dr asked if I wanted to schedule an official growth scan. My fundal height has been normal and I haven't had any issues, so it is up to me if I want it or not.
  • Thanks ladies! :)

No issues here, other than PTL, but I'll be off bed rest at my 36 wk appointment on Friday. The doctor couldn't tell his position at 34 weeks. She mentioned possibly trying to turn him at 37 weeks externally (forget the name for this) but said we'd talk about it more at my upcoming appointment.

  • I had my 36 week appt. yesterday. I did not get an US, but I have had around 25 throughout the pregnancy. Baby has been head down for a while. She was also able to feel the baby's head when she did an internal exam, so I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

She said if I was still pregnant next week she might do one, just because my little girl has been measuring so big.

  • I am 36w3d and am having an ultrasound today to check on things.  I don't think it is common practice though.  When I asked my doctor about it several weeks back, he basically gave me the option.

  • Mine only does if there is some concern about size or position.
My doctor is the same.  They can typically feel where the baby is with their hands.

Yes, my OB tried last time but couldn't tell. Hopefully she will be able to tell this time. :) DS was head down and engaged for weeks prior to birth. Hope this DS easily goes head down also. :)

  • My 36w is next week. I go to my regular OB for cervical check and strep B swab- I think that's pretty routine at this point. Afterwards, I go to my MFM on the same day for a level 4 ultrasound/growth scan due to being high risk + ptl. Unless you've had issues or discussed it beforehand, I don't think a US from your regular OB is standard at 36. It could vary by practice though.
  • I had mine done on Friday. I was only measuring a week ahead but they used measuring big as the "excuse" to have it covered again! I also found out yesterday that I don't have to have the group b strep test! I tested positive at the beginning of the pregnancy so they aren't even going to check again and they are just goin to give me the antibiotics anyway!

I had my 36 week appt yesterday. She ordered a growth scan since I was measuring small. Sure enough, baby is measuring small. I knew about the extra ultra sound from my previous appointment though. She also checked my cervix which hurt like you wouldn't believe. She told me it was because my cervix was so high up. It felt like she was trying to examine my tonsils from down there!! And now I'm left with some unpleasant bleeding from it. FX your appt goes much smoother than mines!!
  • @lihau88

Thank you and I hope you feel better soon!!!

  • No more u/s for us unless there is question/concern about something.  At my 35 week appointment, my OB will feel for baby's position and size.  So, I'm hoping no ultrasound necessary.
  • My practice does a routine growth scan at 36 weeks, but the practice I delivered my other 2 with did not.
  • I actually think whether you have an U/S or depends a lot on your insurance. My practice told me that my insurance only covers the a/s unless there are other concerns or issues that need to be addressed with an U/S.

  • I had one this morning (my 3rd for this pregnancy, dating, anatomy scan, today was final growth scan). I've had at least 3 for all of my pregnancies. I've been measuring on track this whole time except for this past monday I was measuring two weeks ahead. The scan showed baby was only measuring a few days ahead and right around 6lbs. I'll have my strep swab this coming monday at my 36 week appointment.
  • My 36 week appointment is scheduled for next week and I'll be having an US (standard at the practice).  I think she said I would be having one every week until LO  arrives, but I can't remember for sure,.

Had my 36 week appointment today. I am now scheduled for an ultrasound next week since I am currently measuring 2 weeks behind. The doctor could tell the baby was in position and said she might have been curled up causing me to measure small but want to double check. And I agree with lihau88 cervical checks are painful!
  • My 36 week appt. is tomorrow, but no u/s is done after the a/s unless something is wrong (measuring small, can't tell how LO is positioned, etc.).
  • I just had my 36w appt and no ultrasound was mentioned. I did have one 3 weeks ago because I'm measuring about 5 weeks ahead. Measuring off and position issues are the only reasons they do extra ultrasounds at my practice. Honestly, the u/s Wasn't anything special because he's so big it's hard to see much of him anyway. I might have just had a crappy tech though.

  • They only did a super short US for me to make sure baby was positioned correctly. My MW could feel everything else.
