Won't take a bottle

Dd usually takes a bottle when needed but refuses since her bed feed and her late night feed. Fights it hard. I can't nurse due to meds. Pray/good thoughts she'll start taking my milk that way. I tried formula she said f u to that. My stash is only a few bottles. Hope this stone passes so I don't pump n dump too much. Thanks for letting me whine

Re: Won't take a bottle

  • Ahhh the sippy is a great idea! I will try that if she won't take it later. Thanks.

  • DS would never take a bottle either. And wouldn't take breastmilk from a sippy. He would drink water from a sippy though, weird, how old us your LO? I can't remember. Is she eating solids yet? I feel like she us really small, but time flies around here.

Do you mind if I ask what meds? Very few medications require you stop BFing.

  • They gave me hydrocodone. They said it could relax her body too much and lower her respirations. My sil and two bil are nurses and said it's dangerous. Sil had a friend who took it and fb and it put her baby in the hospital

Z wouldn't take a bottle and couldn't figure out to tip the sippy, so she went straight to a straw cup. I think she was around 7 months when we introduced it.

@spapeggy it is ok to breastfeed on hydrocodone. Certainly it's a personal choice and if you don't feel safe doing so, that's totally understandable.

    https://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/pain-meds/

Studies show about 3% of the maternal dose was transferred via breastmilk which was not enough to be considered unsafe or harmful to the baby.

    The things to consider are:

-the age and weight of your baby. Your DD is 22.5 lbs so she certainly can handle more than a small baby could. Also, she probably drinks less BM than if she wasn't on solids.

-timing of feed. The half life of hydrocodone is 3.8 hours, so 50% of the drug is out of your system in 3.8 hrs. Ideally, if you BF'd 4 hours (or longer) after taking your last dose, your DD would have a lower chance of absorbing any.

-side effects. All drugs are partially absorbed by infants albeit very, very little. You could monitor your DD for sleepiness, shallow breathing and difficulty waking although this is very rare.

Hydrocodone is actually the drug of choice for postpartum breastfeeding mothers because it is so predictable (unlike codeine which is absorbed differently by everyone). I personally took hydrocodone 2 days postpartum (and BFing) with a premature infant under the advice of my OB with no problems.

Again, I totally understand if you're not comfortable but I just wanted to provide you with a little more information.
