Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Gymboree classes

DH is gone this weekend, and I'm trying to scope out fun, indoor activities for DS and I to get us out of the house.  I noticed that Gymboree offers one free trial class, and I wanted to see if others have done classes there and if they were fun for your LOs. What type of stuff did you do?  I'm not sure I would pay for classes, but might do the trial.  DS is 15.5 months, so we would be in the Play and Learn level 3 class.

Re: Gymboree classes

  • We have been doing the music class at Gymboree for about 6 Months and DD loves it. We also did the gym class for a couple of months but dropped it because DD was just bored with it - the gym equipment is mostly hills, slides and tunnels and the program was very repetitive (it's mostly set at the corporate level even though they are a franchise, so I think the program is fairly standard from one Gymboree to the next). We ended up going to another toddler gym even though it costs more, because it was much more fun and engaging for DD.

  • We have been doing the Gymboree gym class since DS was 12 months. He is now 19 months. It is pretty expensive but I think it is worth it for him. I am a SAHM so it gives him the socialization in addition to the learning. They do some songs in a circle at the beginning, then stuff on the equipment, then come back to the circle for parachute time, bubbles, and more songs. I think it really does depend on the instructor. We LOVE our current instructor but have had several different ones at make up classes and previous levels and some are definitely better than others. Our current one actually tries to teach the kids how to maneuver the equipment rather than just being a cheerleader while they do whatever they want.
  • We go once a week and DS loves it! He also rarely likes to stay in the circle for circle time but is getting better. I love watching him grow into things - like he now recognizes when the bubbles are coming, knows what to do as soon as he sees the parachute coming out, things like that. I think it's great for him! He's 18 months and in Level 4

  • i personally haven't gotten a chance to do it, but my cousin goes with her daughter and she is constantly talking about how much she loves it! her daughter even raves on and on about how much fun it is.

  • DD doesn't sit still for the actual class, so we rarely go. Te best part of the membership is the open gym! That makes it worth it for us.
Our little Samosa arrives in January!
  • DS never joins in circle time, but he has tons of fun with the equipment. I don't know if it's all that worthwhile in the summer since he could play outside then, but in the winter when he can't play outside, I think it's good.
  • Thanks everyone!  I think we'll give it a shot sometimes.  It's across town from where we live, so I am not sure I'd want to pay for the classes, but it doesn't hurt to try it.

DS was around that age when we had the trial class and it was super fun, but it was hard to keep him with the rest of the class. He wanted to run and explore and not sit in a circle and sing! I would pay for classes for sure but they don't offer any on the weekends for his age group :( Don't they know that some people work during the week?!
Not sure if you have a Little Gym near you, but they have weekend classes Sat and Sun.  Plus they actually say at the beginning of every class that if LO wanders that's fine, but they ask that the parents stay put on the mat to set a good example.  Just a thought!
  • we signed up for a music and me class starting next week. about a month ago they had a free trial class and we went to see how DD would do. I was worried she would run amuck and not participate but she sat and listened and participated. It was amazing! So we signed up and can't wait to go back!

I would go to the free trial and see how LO does and go from there.
  • It's fun! We went there for two months when DS was 1 since I'm off in the summers. I don't really think it was worth the cost though... unless you go several times a week.
