Am I crazy? WWJ12D?

I am a working mom. I work full time as a psychiatric social worker in an emergency room. I work 12 hour shifts which include every other weekend and then 2-3 days a week (80 hours per pay period). I am home with DS and Now DD the other days. Tomorrow I have an interview for a PRN position to do home studies for foster homes. It would be anywhere from 0-4 home studies a month which include at least 1 home visit, some research and writing up a long assessment. I could do the research and writing from home. The interviews can be scheduled based on my and the families schedule. Normally I wouldn't do this because I am already really busy between my full time job, 2 kids under 2 and just life in general....but I will get paid 600-650 per home study. DS is starting daycare 2 days a week soon an d we have a ton of debt so this money could really help. Am I crazy to do this? I already hate being gone every other weekend and am tired all the time. What would you do? I kind of think if I can manage for a year it would be worth it. Thoughts?

Would you have control over taking vs not taking them?  As in, if your life is particularly hectic one month can you pass?

If it is like that, then I can't see the harm of trying it out, and if it works, great, and if not then just don't take anymore assignments.
I agree with this. If you can be selective about which cases you take and when then I would do it. If not I think it would be more stress than it is worth and you would never have any down time.

  • I definitely plan to ask tomorrow how much say I have the cases I take. The home visits can take anywhere from 1-2 hours plus travel time which would depend on where I have to go. I could be up to 60 miles away. The research and writing would probably take 5-7 hours depending in the number of family members. DH is supportive and does help with the chores and kids but he also works probably 65 hours a week already.

  • Can you try it and see how you like it? I just worry about your work/life balance if you throw that in there. The money would be great, but you need to ask yourself if it is worth the sacrifice.

I think it does sound like a lot. I think you just have to really evaluate what your own personal limits are. I know for myself, in the past I have become very overwhelmed by taking on too much - and I've tried to make a commitment to say no to things that could potentially overload my schedule. As PP's said, I think if you could try 1 per month to start and see how it goes, then you'd get a better idea. Good luck!
