Identical twins starting daycare

Hi ladies. My girls are 16 months and it's hard for others to tell them apart. We have had a nanny for over a year, but she is expecting a baby of her own, so now my girls will be starting daycare next month. Should I do something to help the daycare provider tell them apart, besides dressing them differently? Does it even matter at this age?

Re: Identical twins starting daycare

  • Our daycare has a little form to fill out each day (last feeding, last diaper, time awake, etc), so I just dress them differently and write what each is wearing on the form.

  • When I worked in a center I took care of twin boys, their mom always color coded them. One was red/yellow/orange and the other was green/blue/purple :) it made it easier in the beginning. But after a while their personalities became the thing that set them apart.
  • My girls are smaller (6mos) but I usually always put Penelope in pink. It's easy to remember. Evie is then in whatever color is left over.
At my daughters preschool, there is a set of twin boys and the mom dresses them the same. No one has a clue which is which (and the mom swears they're frat but never tested). It kinda sucks bc no one wants to keep asking over and over again who's who.
  • My girls started daycare at 11 mos and the daycare provider just put a strip of tape on their back with their name on it for the first few weeks until they learned to tell them apart.  I also talked them through all the things that I think are different about the two - b/c it's really hard to tell.  I also sent them in lots of monogrammed clothes!

  • Before my kids could talk… around 18-22 months I dressed them in different colors.  Joey in blue, Nathan in green.  Once they could talk and showed more personality it was very easy for the provider to tell them apart (it was a small home daycare).

Now in preschool they have 4 teachers, all but 1 can tell them apart.  I honestly don't worry about it now.  They can say who they are.  Their personalities are still so different, but the teacher insists in school because their skills are also so ID she has a hard time…. she uses their sneakers.  Wasn't too happy they got new ones for Christmas (c:  Yesterday I heard "how dare your mother get you new sneakers."  She was teasing of course.  She did look at Nathan's face and say thank goodness his cowlick is noticeable in his recent hair cut.
