High-Risk Pregnancy

Vasa Previa - anyone?

I am at 36 weeks, 4 days, and was just diagnosed with vasa previa today after an ultrasound, which was done because of my low lying placenta (which for the most part moved up, but there is a vessel close to my cervix). I have a c-section planned for Thursday of this week, as a result. Do most people with this condition deliver earlier than 37 weeks? also, for anyone who has dealt with an early term planned c-section, what are the questions I should be asking my doctor? My first child was a vaginal induction at 39 weeks (due to high blood pressure) that went beautifully. This is my first time dealing with an earlier delivery on top of a c-section.

All I know about vasa previa is what I know from my velamentous cord insertion diagnosis b/c that sometimes develops into vasa previa. From what I understand, they should deliver you pretty quickly after you get that diagnosis so long as you are in the viable stage, which you obviously are. There are risks to the baby if they wait.

Also, it will need to be by c section, I believe there are risks of damage to the cord and therefore to the baby if you actually go into labor.

Knowing, though, is more than half the battle. Sometimes this isn't diagnosed and then it can be dangerous but since they know about it going in, you will probably be totally fine. It sounds like your doctors are great!

  • Because they don't want to risk you going into labour it is normal to have a c-section prior to 37 weeks. If your waters were to break there is a very high chance of the blood vessels tearing which is very dangerous for baby.

Babies born after 36 weeks generally do extremely well and usually don't require any NICU time. Some do needs a little help getting breathing started.

  • Thanks so much! I delivered last Thursday. Although I lost a bunch of blood, no transfusion was needed and my little boy, Auden, arrived. He is in the NICU for a few days (some difficulty with breathing), but he is progressing really well. Thanks for the support. That was one anxiety-provoking week!
  • Congrats! I had vasa previa, was on bedrest at 32 weeks and delivered at 34 weeks. My LO was in the NICU for 15 days but is a perfectly healthy 7 month old baby now.
