Does your LO have a MOTN feeding?

Sometimes DD wakes up at night crying. We try to soothe and give her the paci, but sometimes that doesn't work and we'll give her 2-3 oz of formula. I feel like she really shouldn't need a feeding at night, but I'm not sure. At our 6 month, over a month ago, our pedi said 1 feeding was fine, but I'm not sure if we should continue doing it. She's been going up the charts, and I'm not sure if it's from those few extra ounces we give her. She was around 30-40% for both, and at her 6 month jumped to the 50's.

Has anyone seen their pedi for their 7 month, and if they said MOTN feeding was OK?

  • he goes back in forth between 1 to 2 feedings a night. I tired to cut them out but he would wake up 2 hours later. Plus he doesn't eat much and is under weight so I don't mind MOTN feedings right now.

  • EBF and one feeding usually around 4 or 5 am. I think I'll try weaning her off it by 8 months if she hasn't done so herself.

  • Yup. Sometimes it's just once, sometimes multiple. Like Saturday night I think he wanted to eat, literally, every hour trying to make up for not eating much during the day. He had a bit of a stomach bug, plus with me trying to wean, he just refused to eat more than 2 ounces or so at a time. I'd be totally ok with a feeding or even two overnight, just as long as he didn't wake up a billion times a night.

  • LO hasn't had his 6 month check up yet because he's one of the young ones on the board.  (We go in on Thursday.)  He has 2-3 MOTN feedings.  I'm torn about weaning him off any of them, but we'll start to consider it closer to 7 months if nothing has changed.
  • This made me laugh...DS eats 3-4 times a night at 6.5 mths. He wakes up more often then that. When he eats he really eats probably like 4-5oz so I'm not trying to wean him. At our 6mth appt his pedi mentioned CIO, but that's not right for our family so we're just dealing with the wakings. We might try his crib in his room soon to see if not waking up and seeing us makes a difference.

  • N wakes 1 - 2 times a night. Sometimes more, rarely (very) she will STTN. She still eats 6oz every time she wakes so I know she is hungry and not just waking. Over Christmas she was waking and staying awake for 2-3 hours every night for a week. It sucked but she *seems* to be doing better.
  • We are down to 2 most nights. However, if he wakes up more than that and won't settle after being rocked/walked for 5-10 minutes, I will feed him again. Bad habit I guess, but it's the quickest way to get him back to sleep.

  • He wakes up 2-3 times to eat. He's in the 99th percentile for height and weight.
If he didn't suck down his bottles at each feeding, I'd consider weaning him. But as it stands, he sucks down 4-5oz, in 5 minutes flat, in the MOTN.
My pedi also said I could start weaning him if I choose. She said if we didn't mind getting up and he seemed to be actually eating (as opposed to just comfort eating) then continue.

We are moving at the end of this month, and he will have his own room. I'm considering trying to wean then, but, it's just not something I'm ready for.

Twinsies except we aren't moving and he's already in his own room. I just have a hungry tanker. Nom nom nom. I have 6 month appt tomorrow and I'm sure he'll tell me to try and wean some of the feedings for my sanity. Mainly because I burst into tears at one appointment. Bad hormones!!

  • I'm really trying to wean from MOTN feedings, but work has been so crazy that I don't have the energy at night to keep soothing and I know if I feed him I can get at least 2 hours of sleep.

But I'm trying to push all feedings to every 4 hours instead of every 3 in order to make time for solids, so soon enough!!

  • No. She sleeps from usually 9:00-7:30ish without a feeding.
  • Yes, if LO is not teething he will wake up to eat 1x in the MOTN. He's EBF and sleeps 8-6:30 with a wake up between 2 and 3am.

  • DD has several feedings at night. DS woke up to eat at night until he was 13.5 months when I completely weaned him. Most of it was for comfort, but there is nothing wrong with it.
  • No. She sleeps from usually 9:00-7:30ish without a feeding.
    Same here.
  • He was waking 1-2x a night and I was feeding him each time. The pedi told me he should be able to go through the night without eating and should be starting to sleep through the night. She suggested that I start to sleep train. Last night was the first night that he went all night without eating.
  • *a* MOTN feeding?  no.  Many MOTN feedings?  yes.

    Oi.

LO learned bad habits at daycare.  He hates to eat from the bottle during the day, so he waits for me at night.  As a result, I'm loathe to cut him off.  As a result - multiple MOTN feedings.  I figure I've lasted 6 months, I can make it until he eats solid food ;-)

  • She didn't before (sometimes once), but there are a lot of possible factors that could be messing with her sleep the last week or two. We are cutting a tooth, had shots Thursday, had her schedule uprooted over the holidays, went through a leap, and got over a stomach bug during Christmas. I am praying this tooth breaks through this week and we can be back to no night feedings again. The last three nights she was up twice screaming her head off and nursed back to sleep.

  • I was so afraid to open this thread because I thought you all were going to say you were done feeding MOTN. I feed him every time he cries in the middle of the night, which is several (3ish) I don't like it, but I don't have the energy to stay up and soothe when I leave for work at 6:00AM.
  • Nope. Has an 8 oz bottle at 9 pm and sleeps from 9:30 pm to about 9:00 am. He wakes up a few times a night but that just usually calls for a binky and a couple pats on the back.

  • No. Last nursing around 7 pm and then wakes to eat around 7-8 am.

  • Every now and then, she'll wake up and ear. I try to soothe, rock w/o feeding first but if she doesn't go back to sleep, we give 3oz and that usually gets her back to sleep!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Yep. He's 6 months, 7 on the 14th. We co-sleep so most nights he's up 3 to 4 times for comfort to make sure I'm there. I've started using his paci or lovey during the day to sleep which has help cut down the wakings. Instead of comfort feeding which he does 2 to 3 min Bf...I use those so others. My pedi suggested after 16 lbs and no health issues he should be ok with one MOTN feed.
While I'm sleep training I'll gage it with his day intake.
  • I leave this thread green with envy.

  • Still eating once a night. Every now and then it'll be twice. He has never gone a night without a MOTN feeding.
