I feel like I need a neutral opinion...

Jay and I are considering re-homing the dogs...  Otis is leaps and bounds better than he used to be when we had cats AND dogs.  We re-homed and surrendered the cats.  It was FUCKING brutal on us.  I know that the ones that we surrendered were likely euthanized, and that weighs heavily on my heart and my conscience.  BUT, he was miserable.  He is better, but his skin is still constantly open in his trouble spots and most of them are on his face and hands.

So...  with cats and dogs he looked like this: image

With just dogs he looks like this: image

His lip is constantly inflamed and scabbed or open and bleeding.  He has two spots near his ears that are the same.  His fingers look similar to his lip as well.  I should add that these skin conditions are WHILE USING desonide and mupirocin on his face and triamcinolone on his body.  Plus, he takes cetirizine orally.

It's like, this should be a no-brainer:  Kid > Animal, but this FUCKING blows!!

Tell me it's OK to consider having no animals for the sake of my kid's health.

  • Ok, seriously.  I love my animals.  And before the kids, we were those people whose dog went everywhere with them.  But, they had to take a back seat when DD1 came into the picture.  And although it would break my heart, I would re-home them in a second if we had any sort of allergy issues that were causing either one of the girls any kind of discomfort.  Is it a shitty situation?  Yep. Are you shitty for doing it?  Absolutely not.  I know it is heartbreaking, but it is what we would do, as well.  Hugs!

  • Get rid of the dogs. Try no kill shelters.
  • Thanks, ladies...  Seriously.  Thank you.

  • JK its natural to love your animals like they are people. We adore our furbaby but if L was in this situation I would for sure keep the animal's outside until I found a good home or a shelter.

    Hope you find something asap.

  • It's a difficult decision but in the best for Otis. We have had to re home our chocolate lab because she was too unpredictable around toddlers but perfectly fine with older children (thanks to craigslist). We also had to get rid of our cat who was unpredictable with anyone. DH grandpa actually took him because eventhough his behavior was horrible we were still attached. Unfortuantly he was put down for biting an employee pretty bad (which we knew would happen) Yes we feel horrible but in our eyes the animals have to grow with the family. DS has allergies and fortunately he is not allergic to our yellow lab. It's never easy to get rid of a companion and member of the family. Hope you find a good new home and give you peace of mind.

  • I am a total animal person, but you have to do what is best for your son.  I'm not sure where you live but I am a vet tech in the philly area and have a couple connections with some good rescues that would find your dog a great home..let me know if your interested :)  good luck!
  • Hugs to you....

I know you love your furry friends, but Otis comes first. If there's any chance at all that it will help him, you should do it.

  • Our dog is a million percent a member of our family.  He's our first baby.  And he would probably have to go live with my IL's if my son was suffering.  Can you try to find him a home of a friend of a friend or something?  Ask on Facebook?  Craigslist even for a reliable good home?  I assume he's probably great with kids (who aren't allergic, poor buddy)?  I'm so sorry.  I would be completely wrecked over this too.  So so difficult :(

    Kid trumps dogs 1000x over.

I'm sorry you have to make the decision.  But as much as you love the animals, Otis and his health are more important.
