Elevated lead levels?

DS was tested for lead at 14 months(really late 1 year appt) and his levels came back elevated. They were 5.3 when under 5 is within normal range.

He's supposed to be tested again at his 18 month appt but I'm wondering if I should do it sooner? We were mailed something from our states health department which said to test within 3 months of the first. Do I listen to his doctor or the state?

Anyone else deal with this?

Also, should I have his older sister tested too?

Re: Elevated lead levels?

  • I would just listen to the doctor, I don't think one month would make much of a difference anyway.  Maybe they didn't get enough blood the first time?  DS had his done yesterday and it came back elevated (they give you the results right away if you wait).  Anyway, the nurse said she thought it came back elevated because she did not take enough blood, so she gathered another sample.  She told me she would call back if it was elevated again, I never received a call so I assume it was fine the second time.  If your son's comes back elevated again then I would have your daughter tested as well.
