Symphony better suction? Problems returning to work :(

HELP!

I have just returned to work and I EBF twins.  When I am pumping one side doesn't completely let down and milk supply builds up.  It feels like the pump doesn't have enough suction for that side.  I am MISERABLE.  I have a Medela PIS, but does anyone know if the Symphony can provide any more suction?  I have tried warm, I have massage, nothing is working...it's like the pump does just enough to stimulate more production, but not enough to let it all out, making me really really uncomfortable. :'(

I am not new to BF'ing - I have a 3 year old I nursed for 2 years...this never happened with her.  Why do I feel like such a newbie?? :(

  • This is probably super obvious, but have you checked the valves and membranes? I had a tiny tear in a PIS membrane and it affected the suction greatly. New membrane fixed the problem immediately.

And have you checked the tubing/other parts? I called Medela for a problem with my Harmony pump and they walked me through some troubleshooting. I found them to be very helpful. GL.

  • Ohh I should have said that - - yes, I have an older PIS from a family member that I tried today too so I could rule out anything like that.  Used completely different set of parts :(

I'd still call them and have them walk you through the troubleshooting. They sent me parts I needed free of charge when I called, and they have fully replaced pumps as well. Great customer service.

Also, possible that you have a painless plugged duct? I've had those. Seems odd that this could be affecting you on one side but not the other.
  • I don't know about better suction, but I do prefer the Symphony to the PIS. My work provides the Symphony and I find have to do less breast compressions to get my milk out. At home with PIS I have to add a lot of compressions for the same effect. I find the Symphony to have a more comfortable suction. Don't know if this helps, but good luck!
