Cloth Diapering

Back Leaks?

I'm hoping you can help...

DS is 3 months and is about 13.5 - 14lbs.  The last couple nights I've noticed that his back is damp when I've picked him up MOTN.  The first night I thought it was back sweat.  Then, last night, the dampness seem concentrated around the point on his back where the top of his diaper is.  So I changed him MOTN (I don't normally - we use BG 4.0s with both inserts for ON).  Now, this morning, he's been napping and he has a concentrated wet spot (visible through his swaddle) that is clearly from a leaking diaper (I think he's currently in a Kawaii P&N).  So, the question is - what is causing the leak and what should I change first to help prevent?  What is weird to me is that he's only been in his current diaper less than 2 hours and he has such a significant leak.  And it seems like such an odd spot to be leaking - literally the farthest spot away from where he pees from.

Some other info - we have a stash of all pocket diapers (BG 4.0s, Kawaii P&N and HD2, Alvas, Sunbaby) and usually use the MF inserts that come with.  We do have a stash of Alva Bamboo and a few Sunbaby blend inserts.  Also, we always put him down to sleep on his back.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting would be helpful!  I don't want him to be leaking every time we put him down to sleep for any period of time.  I am loving CDing minus this issue.

Re: Back Leaks?

  • Yes, the inserts are soaked when I change him in the morning.  I have the P&Ns at the highest rise (all the way let out).  But the BGs are still on the lowest rise.  I'll try letting them out a setting and see if that helps.  Is there a guideline on how high the diaper should rise on the baby?  Like as high as the bellybutton?

  • It could also be compression leaks. Is try double stuffing overnight with a MF on top and one of your bamboos underneath.
