Ways to refer to gender

I'm working on design an invite for a gender reveal party and was trying to think of some different ways to refer to gender, i.e. guys or dolls, quarterback or cheerleader, beau or bow, bowtie or tutu, etc. Has anyone seen any other really cute ideas? I just want to come up with all the option before I commit. Thanks!

Re: Ways to refer to gender

  • Just warning you- gender (sex, really) reveals aren't really popular around here...

  • I actually like gender reveal parties (there, I'm out) for close friends, but the quarterback/cheerleader one really rubs me the wrong way as well.  It just slots people into these incredibly narrow, specific expectations so early on based on nearly nothing.  Squicky.  I think beau or bow is cute.  Mustaches are in right now.  When I was little my mom had this whole comedy routine with a hair bow, where she held on her head to be the female character, her neck to be the male character (bowtie), and under her nose to be the wicked mustachioed villain.  Maybe work off that somehow?
  • well since i don't intend on the theme of a party being the deciding factor of how my child  identifies his or her gender, i don't think it will be much of an issue. I am fairly confident they will not ask to see the invites to their genital reveal party to decide if they would rather play sports or cheer on the sidelines. But I can see I obviously came to the wrong place for fun ideas. I realize some of the ideas are better, some not so great but I was just trying to show a set to try and explain what I was looking for.

I'm sorry for you if your family and friends aren't excited to find out the sex of your child. I get questioned regularly if we will find out the sex, if we will share if we find out, if we have a preference, etc. so I don't see the lack of interest that you see. I don't think any one "cares" in the sense that they only want one or the other but I do think it would be odd if my mom or brother or other friends or family had no interest in knowing what the sex of my child would be. I'm not planning on throwing a facebook invite out to my entire friend list- just a fun way to share the sex of my baby with family and close friends.

Anyway- sorry to be so crass and tasteless.
  • @Joy2611 That is an impressive level of tacky. Like, beyond just garden variety, it's Hall of Tacky Fame.

  • Every single person I saw while I was pregnant, up to and including checkers at the grocery store and teenagers on the bus, asked me if I was having a boy or a girl. That doesn't mean they all would have wanted to come to a reveal party. It's just a way of making conversation with a pregnant woman. Just like now that I have a 4 month old, everyone asks how she sleeps.
This exactly. Its one of the small talk things that people feel comfortable with, because everybody LOVES talking to pregnant women or people with a baby. People also love to ask when you're due but they wouldn't want a due date revealing party.

Oh, please don't give the tackinistas more ideas!

Honestly, I don't get the big deal here. In my area, gender reveal parties are not gift giving events. They're just for fun. Like a barbecue or dinner party. So all the girls who are against gender reveal parties: are you just as opposed to being invited to a barbecue? Because it's basically like the same thing. At least around here.

    Anyway...

To the original poster: Before my sister accidentally spilled the beans on my nephews gender, I had designed an invitation for her gender reveal party. We were only planning on having about 15-20 of our closest friends and family to have appetizers and dessert. Not really a big deal. The wording on the invitation was:

    Tonka Trucks or Princess Pearls?
Will baby Jones be a boy or a girl?

Please join us for a gender reveal party honoring proud parents-to-be Mary Smith and Steve Jones.

    Hope that helps. :)
  • I have never been to a gender reveal party, they are not too popular where I live, but I get that they are becoming a thing to do. I would keep it simple and not too cutesy. I am sure that pinterest has some examples of invite wording for a gender reveal party.

  • First of all, I don't like gender reveal parties. I also can't imagine wanting to go to one for someone. Anyway, if you are set on doing it, why not just boy or girl? I dont even really understand what you are asking. Are you going to phrase it as "hey come see whether we are having a football player or a cheerleader!"? Strange.

I agree this is strange. It's also very sexist.

Whatever you do, do not Google vajazzle.  It is all kinds of wrong.

You know I had to look, right? That is all sorts of wrong!

  • I like boy or girl.

I find the others to be offensive. It is a sex reveal party - you find out the gender 14+ years down the road. I don't understand why it is uncomfortable to use the word sex. You are throwing a party and the theme is genitals. Weird, yes, but most people think it's fun anyways. This is why we won't be finding out the gender but if we happen to find out, we will just send a text message or tell people like normal. The sex of the child is such a small part of who they will become. :)
  • We did a gender reveal party and loved it.  However, it was an informal get together with our friends back home since we won't be seeing them again until baby is probably 6+ months old.  We didn't have formal invitations and definitely no gifts.  We just contacted our friends and said, hey if you're available, we'll be in town for thanksgiving and we're going to have a little fun to find out the sex of the baby on Friday.  Hope to see you guys there!

Come celebrate and see... He or She (HerShey bars are easy to color with a sharpie for this easy theme)
    Cowboy/Cowgirl
    Bows/Bow Ties
Red vs Blue with silhouette like an election/voting

    Non-gender specific options -
Ducks as the theme "Waddle It Be?"
Owl theme "Who wants to know?"
Bees theme "What's it gonna bee"
Superstitions - just play up all the old wives' tales craving sweet vs salty, chinese calendar, etc.
