One & Done: Only child

Support from Strangers

We have been out to eat with our family several times over the holidays. Every single one of our waitresses said while looking at LO "He is so cute! I have a little one and I love them but I am done!"
It was great for my family to hear an outsiders perspective helping support our reasons for remaining a family of three. :D

Has anyone else had 'support' from others that surprised you?

  • It's about 50/50. Our babe is upper easy going, at least for now, and we get a lot of, "But he's so laid back." Yeah, but no guarantee the next one will be the same.

  • Yes, I work at a university and one of the students is an only child and when I was in conversation with her, I told her that we were "one and done" and she said "Good, keep it that way." :-)  It's great to get supportive comments.

  • I haven't had the conversation with complete strangers, but I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from casual acquaintances. Over the holidays I got together with some friends and old coworkers that I hadn't seen in years.  Most of them are older than me and have kids in college.  A few have separated from their husbands around the time the kids left for school.  Everyone was very understanding and supportive.  Those BTDT moms, especially those that have raised multiple kids to adulthood, now how very hard and challenging parenting is.
