Iron

DS refuses to eat any kind of meat 99% of the time so he gets minimal iron and since I have an iron deficiency I worry about him not getting enough iron. He also does not eat many green veggies so he doesn't get it there either. I try to find other foods with iron in it that he will eat but it is a small amount. Anyone else dealing with a non-meat eater? Any suggestions on how to get more iron in him? TIA!

  • I think egg yolks have a lot of iron - does he like eggs? What about beans? You could make those spinach muffins that some ladies on here swear by - I think they have banana and spinach in them. Does he like quesadillas? You could purée some spinach (or buy a baby food container of it if you are lazy like me) and spread it on a tortilla, cover with cheese and sneak it into him that way!

    We are a vegetarian family, so I have to look for other sources of iron for everyone.

    Does your LO like beans?  Lots of beans are high in iron...black beans, kidney beans lentils etc

    Some nuts and seeds are good sources like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews... not really toddler friendly in whole form, but you can grind them up and add them to baking or sauces.

    Other sources:
    -raisins
    -iron-fortified cereal
    -the skins of potatos (I make homemade fries with the skin on)
    -Kale
    -Peas
    -blackstrap molasses
    -Dark Chocolate - maybe more for the mom to enjoy though :)

  • We have vitamins too. Our pedi prescribed them because we have an RO and there's no fluoride in the water. They're free, which is sweet!
