Nursery Budget

Re: Nursery Budget

  • Thanks @amoot890 and @kittenslove. The set I really want is white and I think I'd use it with a boy or girl... I'm dying to bite the bullet and buy it!

Random question, but does anyone know of good places to buy mix and match solid/print crib bedding.  I don't want to go the custom route necessarily because they are so pricey, but I think we want to just pick two colors and make our own crib set.
www.babybedding.com is great for mix and match bedding/window treatments. Really great quality too! And they have a tool where you can design the bedding and see it in 3D.
Good to hear it's good quality.  I just found this site while Googling and they have two pre-designed sets that I like.  I ordered the fabric samples for each so hopefully that'll be good enough.  I don't want to look that hard. LOL.  For some reason, H and I are both really into the teal/orange combo, which has been hard to find, so hopefully this will work out.
  • I think other people have already said this, but, if you can afford it, and you believe it to be a worthwhile place to spend your money, why not? If you were spending outside your means and putting your whole nursery on credit that you can't pay back, yes, it's kind of wasteful. But if it's within your means, it's certainly not outrageous.

Oh, and, one way or another, I agree with PPs... it's not your MIL's business how you spend your money!

That said, we'll be spending about $300-$400 on the nursery. We're JUST buying a crib. We already have a dresser we'll use as a changing table, and I have lots of comfy places to breastfeed, so no need for a glider, either. We plan to spend around $200 on a crib and mattress, and a little extra for sheets and a changing pad. The nursery is an area we have chosen not to spend our money.

  • Not to sidetrack, but you know, if I make a new thread I'm a total SS... but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the price of a glider. It's more than the cribs I'm looking at! I don't know why that seems so ridiculous to me (I'm not one who sticker shocks easily!)

  • I am aiming to stay somewhere in the $800-$1000 range.  I'm trying to think smart and buy pieces that will either grow with the baby or can be used for a second kid.

I did have a splurge moment this morning and bought a glider so I'm hoping to save on other pieces by either having items bought for me/going the second hand route.

My DH was originally of the same mind as you. The way I see it, however, you will be spending soooo much time in it, it's worth it. We have no other recliners or arm chairs in the house; just the couch. The one we chose is $600, but it's a-ma-zing. We chose really good quality with a durable neutral fabric to last for all future LOs. Then when theyre grown, we can use it in the living room.
I can appreciate that - and to be honest, when I look at alternatives, I wonder if I'll just wish I had a glider :) I will probably break down at some point. I guess I just wasn't expecting such a big price tag when I first looked!

  • Your MIL is out of touch with inflation.  $300 for furniture and all?  Geesh.

    I have a similar budget.
Crib $300 retail (hope to hit a sale or coupon)
    Mattress $75
Dresser will be a DIY project ($100 give or take)
Changing pad for top of dresser  ?not sure
Decor, paint, rug, curtains $200 or less
Glider Recliner hope to keep under $500 (but willing to spend more because we might want to use it in the living room later on)
    Bedding under $100
    Organization $50

That comes to around $1300 and I consider myself frugal.
