Cloth Diapering

Finally!

DS's umbilical cord finally fell off last night and he is all healed down there as well so no more gauze or ointment. However I'm still nervous about starting cloth. We have a couple pockets and mostly covers and prefolds for the NB stage. I'm nervous because he is a mover when it comes to diaper changes and he pees pretty much every change. I'm afraid I won't be fast enough when putting a prefold on him lol.

Any suggestions/tips before I dive in? I might work up the courage to try tomorrow, idk yet.

Re: Finally!

  • Get a peepee teepee! (Ok, those are actually a waste, but use the same idea with a prefold or wash cloth.) and just do it! Don't stress, just jump in. It's easy!

  • Funny thing is we have been using washcloths to cover him during changes. He seems to always kick it off right at the very end though and pee. I think I just need to get used to changing a little boy lol.
  • J never did this when we changed him, but A pees almost every change. I second the prefold, wash cloth, or cloth wipe over him when changing.

OP, sounds like your son is circumcised but you said you don't have to use ointment anymore since it healed. A bunch of women on my BMB discussed around 4 months PP that you still should be putting Vaseline on after it heals so it doesn't adhere. That happened to a couple of them and i don't want that to happen to your son. DS is intact so I have no idea. Can someone else confirm?
The vaseline actually gave him a sore which is why we stopped using it. Stopped using it, it went away. I'll have to get some coconut oil to use instead.

Ds2 is circ'd and even when he was in the hospital between 4 and 10 days old, they weren't having us put anything on it and we've had no issues with adhesions or anything.  Due to Dh's fear of buying things for ds2 before birth, being discharged from the hospital in a blizzard, and the 2nd stay at the hospital, we didn't even start putting cloth diapers on him until he was 2weeks old.

Ds1 was in sposies and I probably didn't use the Vaseline as long as I should have and still no issues with his either.

I'd how common of an issue adhesions really are.  I had never heard of it until it was mentioned on my bmb.

Yeah this is the first time I've heard about it as well so I'm assuming it's not too common.
  • We used Vaseline for about a week or two until it stopped looking angry. He wound up with one small sticky spot around 6 months. The pedi detached it (DS barely fussed, so it wasn't stuck much) and told me to be sure and pull the skin away from the head at every bath to prevent any more adhesions. This has worked fine for us since then. Unfortunately, my SIL's pedi didn't give her any real instructions about circ care, and her DS2 has had surgery 2x for issues with it. I think they botched the first circ, but I don't really know.
