Good/bad experience with phenylephrine?

So, last night at 3 am in my cold and cough haze, I took some robitussin to only discover minutes later that the top of the box said "CF Max"

One ingredient is phenylephrine (category C) which apparently through Dr. Google you shouldn't take during pregnancy at all. (Miscarriages and birth defects cited).

Of course I panicked and called the birthplace and talked to the nurse there (I'm gonna follow up and call a doctor tomorrow morning.) and she said to not worry and to just not take any more.

Does anyone have any experiences or insight with this drug? I pray that I am far enough along in my pregnancy that I haven't done something harmful to my baby :(

  • Some sudafed has pseudoephrine in it, some sudafed has phenylephrine..

  • I took some sudafed last week that had it in it. My dr said to take regular sudafed which I thought I was but after reading more closely it had phenylephine. I had only taken one dose but I called the dr anyway. She said not to take more but it should be fine. Also said that category C just means there hasn't been adequate studies on humans, just animals that have had adverse effects.
  • At this point everything is developed and risk of miscarriage is very low.  I wouldn't worry!

  • It's only worrisome in the first 13 weeks. My doctor said it is safe to take on occasion after the first tri. She used to teach pharmacology and researches a great deal on the effects of meds during pregnancy. She said not to take it too often. More than 3 days at a time. I have taken phenylephrine and have had no problems. Don't let things like that worry you. Even though that can be really hard.
  • The big thing is staying well hydrated while taking sudafed and not taking it for more than a couple days.
  • Just took some Tylenol cold tonight. Caught a lovely cold from a woman at work. Ugh. One more reason I would rather not be at work.
It's safe according to my ob.
  • It's on my doctor's 'safe for occasional use' list, so I wouldn't worry about it.
