Babies: 6 - 9 Months

my kid hates veggies

DS has been on solids since 6 months and we do a combo of purees at daycare and finger foods at home. He loves to feed himself, and will eat pureed or pieces of fruit but hates veggies. I offer them to him daily, sometimes multiple times a day, but he will only take a bite or two. Any ideas or advice? Do I just not worry if he eats it and just keep offering?

Also, He is pretty good with finger foods (BLW) and am considering sending them to daycare instead of purees, any ideas on foods to send to daycare?

Re: my kid hates veggies

  • I read that it actually takes 80 separate tries before a baby really decides whether or not they like something.  I know it's frustrating, but I'd keep offering (not forcing) veggies.  Do you do any puree mixes maybe to sneak a couple veggies in there?

Maybe sometimes try offering just veggies and no fruit? Given the choice between the two, I would choose fruit, too... but if veggies are all there is that meal, your baby might be more likely to eat some. And since "food before one is just for fun" and all that, no big deal if he doesn't eat as much.

Some things that we have sent with R to the nanny: strips of bell pepper, cooked asparagus or broccoli, cooked carrot sticks, cut up fruit, shredded chicken, plain yogurt mixed with fruit, shredded cheese. You can get fruit cups with no sugar added (packed in 100% fruit juice) and send that if you want something simple with no prep work. You can also send reduced sodium black beans, corn, green beans, etc. out of a can if you want easy. When I cook dinner, I will pull out some things that are approrpriate for the baby and just stick them in the fridge to send. For example, if  I am making chicken enchiladas, I will reserve some plain shredded chicken for the baby. You can also send pieces of coldcuts (turkey, ham, etc).

ETA: Get your cold cuts freshly sliced at the deli to avoid all the weird preservatives put in the pre-packaged stuff.
