Stomach Sleepers

Morning ladies,

for those of you who sleep on your stomach, does your DH or S/O freak out at you and wake you up to switch on your side or back? I know they say sleeping on your stomach is bad for you in the first place but it's the only way I've ever been able to sleep. I've read that while pregnant, that if you happen to turn over on your stomach, it's perfectly fine until you start become uncomfortable after a few weeks and getting bigger. I have a body pillow, but the one I purchased doesn't help at all. I'm eventually going to get a Comfort U body pillow, rather sooner than later.

Re: Stomach Sleepers

  • If stomach sleeping is comfortable for you go ahead and do it until your bump becomes too uncomfortable for stomach sleeping. I love stomach sleeping and relished it SOOOO much postpartum....when I could sleep that is. Now that I'm pregnant again I'm definitely sleeping on my stomach for as long as I can! Though I do remember being worried about it the first time around. Totally normal to worry, but baby is well cushioned in there.

  • You are fine sleeping on your stomach as long as it's comfortable. With my first pregnancy when my belly got too big I would just wedge a pillow so that I wasn't on top of my stomach but on an angle. I like to sleep in all sorts of positions but usually start out in belly position.

  • Oh, I absolutely have no problems sleeping on my stomach. It's my hubby that freaks out and wakes me up to roll over. No matter how many times I try to reassure him that it's okay, it won't stop him from waking me up lol. I guess it will take talking to the OB to make him feel okay with it.

Hmm yeah maybe you can find some info in a book somewhere saying it's ok if you don't want to wait fir the doc. :)

  • It's completely fine until it is uncomfortable for you. I'm a stomach sleeper too and it is already uncomfortable for me because of my nausea. I guess the pressure it puts on my stomach makes it worse.

I showed him another forum with the same answers from ladies saying it's fine but he's so stubborn, if you're not a doc, he won't listen. So maybe I'll just call the OB and speak with someone and put them on speaker so he can hear? He's got to stop waking my up in the middle of the night before I chew his head off one day. I have a tough time sleeping as it is.

Stomach sleep for as long as you can stand it. I remember my first stomach sleep PP... it was amazing. Until I woke up to two boulders on my chest. :)
OMG, 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant, I bought 2 new bras from Victoria's Secret that have now gone to waste since my boobs spill out of them now. BOOOO.. :-q

  • I would be livid if DH were waking me up for that reason. Your body will tell you when it's time to roll onto your side. Yikes.
I haven't flipped out on him yet though it's bound to come. I find it cute that he's concerned as it's our first baby. But like it said...It'll happen soon if he doesn't stop. I've been flipping my shit on him over the littlest things lately. Damn hormones.

  • I slept on my tummy until I couldn't the first time and plan on doing it again. I have one of the u shaped body pillows that I drug out, need to wash the cover but it is the best thing once you start to get bigger. All mamas should get dh to get them one. So worth the money.

  • No. I would murder DH if he did anything to me while sleeping.

  • He'd be a dead man to wake me for that crap. What's better is that he knows it ;-)

  • I'm a tummy sleeper too. You don't have to worry about hurting the baby, and eventually it will just become uncomfortable to sleep that way. With my first I kind of transitioned to side sleeping by half laying on my stomach with one of my legs propped up on a body pillow…kind of hard to explain. But by the end I had gotten a bad cough and cracked one of my legs from it and could only sleep on one side. That sucked.

  • Since I just got done bfing and am finally comfortable on my stomach again I will stay sleeping on my stomach until it gets uncomfortable again. It's not going to hurt the baby.

  • I'm already sleeping with my snoogle. Helps with restless leg, I get such a good nights sleep.

  • I would be pissed if H woke me up for this.  I have a hard enough time getting good sleep.

I usually sleep half on my stomach and half on my side.  My hips are towards the mattress but my chest is usually to the side(not on huge mattress). I slept like that pretty much my whole last pregnancy and will likely do the same this time.

I did ask my doctor about laying on my belly (and flat on my back) last time, more for exercise purposes, and she just said to do it as long as it is comfortable.  If it's uncomfortable, don't do it.

  • My husband would have a pair of black eyes if he woke me and told me to roll over for anything but some midnight whoopie!
Sleep how ever you can, your body will not hurt baby, your body will adjust to your bump...

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • It's fine until it's uncomfortable. Certainly too early to be waking you and rotating! I would murder H in his sleep if he woke me on purpose (our toddler does that enough!)

I'm usually a side sleeper, but on rare nights of insomnia I'll go any direction. I remember longing to stomach sleep when I was way preggo and postpartum, but either the belly or the boobs wouldn't allow it!

  • I agree that the husband in this case needs to do some real research or be quiet. That said, I too am a stomach sleeper and I will continue to sleep on my stomach until it's no longer comfortable. Last time, that happened sooner than expected. You will adjust to sleeping on your back. When you have no other choice, it's like your body and mind just get in. Also, get a snoogle. A snoogle is a lifesaver for pregnant stomach sleepers. Best pregnancy purchase I ever made.
