Pacifier

DS had a crappy night of sleep. My big boy that's been sleeping in until 8am was up at 3, 4, 5..... finally got up with him for the day at 6. Anyhow, in my sleepy boredom I started looking back at old posts. There was a discussion back in July, when most of the babes weweren't quite one..... a lot of us said we'd get rid of the paci around 16-18 mo... which Iis now.

Are you still using them? DS was just using them for his nap & bedtime but for the past few weeks with colds and teething, it seems to always be in his mouth. He has been so cranky and we're guilty of using it too much.

That being said, my goal is to go back to only for sleeping and cutting it out by his 2nd birthday.

We've run into the same exact problem. Teething has caused her to switch from using her soothie at naps and bedtime to always wanting it in her mouth. She also freaks out when she wants it and doesn't have it. my goal is 2 years at this point. I've been trying to hide it some because I find if she doesn't see it, she doesn't ask for it as often.

I always said I'd never allow this:) the things that change when you actually become a parent ;)

    Edit: type fail

  • We dropped the paci at 10 weeks cold turkey and had a couple nights of lots of shush-patting to get her to sleep. That wouldn't really work now, so I'm no help.

We have yet to drop the bottle.  She will only drink a couple ounces of milk from a cup and then don't sleep well at night.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that every kid has their thing they are attached to.
  • I think my boys have gotten more attached to their paci. DH and I have talked about transitioning them to a toddler bed this summer and then working on the paci issue once that is done. As long as it's gone by three I don't really care.

  • We are in the same boat. B has started demanding a paci during the day when she was indifferent before and I thought she would wean herself. Nope. Hopefully we can get her off it when the worst of this cold/teething is over.

  • DS just. Has his for naps and bedtime, and it have zero plans to drop it anytime soon.

  • so far so good- we only use for naps and bedtime.

I keep it up in her crib so it isn't out for her to see and ask for.

our doc already said something at her 15 month appointment about her teeth and dropping the pacifier as soon as possible. we tried for the next couple days after the appointment and failed. I am going to try again when she understands it more? I honestly have no clue when to try again. ugh.
  • We had only been giving it to him for naps and bedtime. Then more teetjing came along, and we gave it to him whenever he wanted it. Soon he started shoving the whole thing in his mouth which made me uncomfortable. He never had it again. 3 nights of CIO, and he never asked for it again.

He never cried for longer than 25 minutes. (The first night was the longest because I went in to check on him, but he wasn't quite asleep yet.) He sleeps much better now, and it's one less thing to carry around.
  • She still has it for naps and bed time. I have no plan to take it away until she's at least 2.
  • Oh, and J would never bother with teething rings before. Once the paci was clearly gone he started actually chewing on teething toys. So that helped.
  • He still has it for sleep only. I have no plans to take it away in the immediate future. He sleeps so well with it, I don't want to go back to sleepless nights.

  • Same as many of the others, DD seems much more dependent on her paci now than a couple months ago. She always has one and flips her shit when she doesn't.

We're about to move cross country so I'm not doing a thing with it until she's happily settled into a new routine.

  • I was so adamant about him not being addicted to a paci. It's one of those "I'll never...." things that went out the window

  • We haven't taken it away much at all due to DS2 teething constantly.  We'll likely cut his binky use down to nap/bedtime at 18 months, and then pull it completely just shy of him turning 2.  That's what we did with DD, and it was no big deal.

  • DD mostly uses hers for naps and bedtimes. But like others have said with teething she has started to want it more and I noticed today that from chewing on the one that it was shredded so I had to throw it away....
I am really nervous about getting rid of it for bedtime, but if she keeps chewing on them they are going to have to go sooner than later.

  • Albert still uses his.  The dog chewed up most of them, and we haven't replaced them.  I'm planning on keeping it out of sight, like pp said, starting this Friday and taking away the night time one completely when he's 18 months old.  He's gone down for a nap before without one, but bed time might be different for him.  We'll see.

  • We still give DS the paci for night and nap and any other time he is stuck in the crib (like while I shower). And sometimes in the car. And sometimes right after a big fall, but I try to hold him while he has it or stick him back in the crib so he doesn't run around with it in. So mostly just in bed and the car...maybe once every week or two does he have it for a few minutes elsewhere.

I am fine with him having it to sleep for awhile still. He just started STTN in December, so I am in no hurry to mess with that. I'd like to be done with it in the car except for long trips pretty soon. It's just so hard to focus on driving while he screams and you know you could make him quiet down if you gave in...

Also, DD used hers for sleeping when we took it away on her first bday (we were so mean). And it only took her like a day to adjust, though she was a better sleeper overall than DS. But for anyone else dreading taking it away for sleeping, it really might not be so bad.
