Screaming while nursing?? (kind of long)

Hi all, I'm hoping for some help with a situation that just arose....tonight while feeding my twins one of them, Jo, flipped out.

She had just latched on and had just a few pulls when she let out a high pitch whimper, she pulled one more time and then started screaming like something was killing her.  The only time I have heard that kind of scream was when they got their shots.  Husband took her since sister was still eating and tried to calm her down.  After about 5 minutes she settled some so I tried to get her to eat again, this time the first pull after she latched got her screaming all over again, so obviously sucking is a problem.  I couldn't figure out what else to do so husband gave her some Tylenol and with in a few minutes she was asleep on him.  She slept maybe 10 minutes, by which time I was finished feeding Evie so I took her and tried to feed her solo.  This time she latched on and went to eating just like normal and now she is sitting her trying to play.

I'm lost though, I have no idea what that was or what happened to her.  It definitely wasn't frustration, sister already had a letdown going plus it was a differentcry.  She's been fine all day, not grumpy really, playing allot to.  They do both have reflux but they are on medicine for that.  Nothing was poking her, diaper was clean and she just pooped yesterday so she's on her right schedule....I really don't know what happened but it has me fairly concerned.

Do any of y'all have any ideas what might be up with her?  I plan on calling the Dr Monday, and if we keep having issues I will take her somewhere tomorrow but she did eat after the Tylenol so already there is that.

Thanks in advance!      O and they are 3 1/2 months old.  We're on shields the first few weeks but have nursed like champs since then.

Re: Screaming while nursing?? (kind of long)

  • I would just assume it is a one time thing. It could be gas? DS will sometimes have sudden pain due to gas.

  • I third the gas bubble hypothesis. I guess it could potentially be an ear infection, but like @theresat858 said, if it doesn't happen again, don't worry about it.

  • That is entirely possible it just really threw me off that she would stop eating and not immediately go back and then have it happen again a second time.  We've dealt with allot of gas with these two and normally they get it out and then go back to food time.

But I guess it will really just be a mystery since she is eating just fine again now :)
    Thanks all!
