Advice for small nursery

Our guest bedroom will be turned into the baby's room which means the queen sized bed has to go (not enough space). I'd still like a bed in there in case I want to sleep in there with the baby at times. I'm a FTM so I'm not sure if this will happen or not, but I'd like the option I think. Do you think it is a bad idea to put a twin bed in there and NO chair/glider/etc? Will breastfeeding be uncomfortable on a bed?
Or would you recommend skipping the bed and getting a reclining chair?
We can't fit both.
I would love a chair that turns into a bed, but I've never actually seen one.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

  • So I would want a bed for you and guests, but a chair is more important IMO. Why not look into a futon?

  • My daughters room is rather large it has a crib, change table and a twin bed.  No chair of any sort.  We had one there the first few weeks and it never got use so I took it out.  I side-lie nurse her allllll the time.  I've spent most nights in there with her sleeping either in the crib or in the bed with me.

The use of chair is very much a individual thing...some use them exclusively others, like me, could care less.  I suppose if you plan to bottle feed it would be more useful though.  But, a bed with lots of comfy pillows would be my preference if I was sitting up and bottle feeding.

  • We just bought a daybed at IKEA for our guest room. It's a twin or it also pulls out with a second twin/king. It even has drawers underneath for storage. I'm pretty pleased with it! It's the IKEA Hemnes day bed.

  • We have a tiny nursery (currently guest room with queen bed).  Our plan is to use a daybed or twin bed in the nursery without a chair.  Since baby isn't here yet, I can't tell you if this is the right decision or not for us, but I think it will work.  We can always replace the daybed with a glider if it isn't working out or just put the glider in the nearby living room.

  • You could use a day bed or a pull out love seat if you don't want to go wit a futon. Personally I needed the back support of a chair or couch especially I'm the early days.

  • Our house and nursery is tiny. We went with a glider and then bought an full blow-up mattress (the really tall ones). We just inflated and deflated for guests or our own use. We shoved it into the baby's room.

I saw this online! Is it comfy?

  • We have a glider in DDs room that we use for night time stories, but we never used it in the beginning. She was in our room until she was STTN at 6 months so I would sit with her in the living room since it's right outside our bedroom. The room we are using for this LO has a twin bed in it currently and not enough room for that and a chair, we are keeping the bed and will do middle of the night feelings in the living room again. Someday I may want to trade it out for a chair since we do use the chair in DDs room now that she's older, but we will worry about that down the road.

  • I did exactly what you're thinking about and had a twin bed in my daughters room. The only time it was ever slept in as a guest bed was in the first 3 months or so when my mom or mil would stay over and slept with the baby. I nursed on the bed as there wasn't room for a chair in there too. I made it work with pillows etc but it was not ideal, and the bed saw so little use that I opted to get a comfy glider/recliner this time around.

We have this daybed, and really like it. Ikea does carry several love seats that have a pull out bed. They also have a twin bed that makes into a chair.

  • The handful of time that I needed to stay in my sons room at night, I either sat in the glider or lay on the floor. I don't think a bed in the baby's room makes much sense. The glider is much more practical.
  • Honestly, I think a comfortable chair makes the most sense. I was never able to figure out breastfeeding while lying down, so I needed to sit upright. The recliner we used reclines flat (Best Furniture's BodyRest recliner), so if I needed to sleep in it I could, but keep in mind that co-sleeping in chairs is really dangerous. The chair was great for nursing, and even though I'm now weaning DS, we still use it to snuggle and read stories together. If you find daybeds or futons comfortable, that might work, but I personally much prefer a well-cushioned, well-built chair.
