Shorter feedings?

My baby is almost 3 weeks old and is feeding for shorter amounts of time. She used to eat for 15 minutes every 2-3 hours and now it's only for about 7-10 minutes every 2-3 hours. Is this normal?

Re: Shorter feedings?

  • I think it's different for every baby, it wasn't until about 6 months old that my LO did some shorter feedings, like 10 minutes. But most of her feedings are still closer to 20-30 minutes. Like p.p. said- as long as her diapers are good and her weight gain is appropriate, then all is well!

  • I wonder the same thing sometimes, as my 3 week old DD only nurses for 7-10 minutes (sometimes up to 15-20, but not the usual).  But she nurses on demand so she may go 2 hours between one feed and then want to nurse again in an hour then go 3 hours, etc.  At night, she'll go 2-4 hours between feeds.

She has plenty of wet/dirty diapers and she's only had two doctor's visits so far but she's been gaining so all must be well.  I'm going to schedule another weight check for next week just to make sure we're on track.  I'm honestly shocked that she can be this efficient at this age.
