Why does pumping hurt

My nipples are seriously destroyed looking. They hurt every time I pump. I have tried different flanges. I use it on the lowest setting. Still miserable. My nipples look white and cracked. I am exclusive pumper and bottle feeder.

Re: Why does pumping hurt

  • Go to an LC and have them fit you for flanges and watch you pump to be sure the pump is functioning properly.

  • Use lots of lanolin between pumping! May want to lube up the nips a little with olive or coconut oil before pumping too.
  • I second going to the LC and using the lanolin. Before using the lanolin though, express a little breastmilk onto your nipple, spread it around, and let it dry. Then put the lanolin on top.

  • Yes, try seeing a LC. Before I switched to formula I was EP and feeding from a bottle. I had a little discomfort the first couple of days, but then no pain after that. What kind of pump are you using? Maybe that could be the issue, I was using a Medella PISA.

  • I am using a medela Pisa. I don't know why it hurts so badly even on the lowest setting.
