Diaper party? (Feeling dumb)

So my wonderful hubby came home today and told me that his friend have him the idea of having a "diaper party" I had never heard of such a thing, he described that basically he cooks out & buys beer and each person of his boys has to bring diapers. I love that he wants to be so involved and help! Now he asked me what size of diapers does he ask them to bring or if they just bring what they please? Any of you who have had an experience or heard of this, just wanted to ask how it goes? I'm a FTM and feeling really dumb but I have to ask I know newborn sizes are for newborns or a little order, but does size 1, 2, etc are they for the ages? Like if they baby is 1, he's a size 1? I feel bad for even asking that but I seriously have NO idea. & you guessed right we haven't stocked up on diapers yet, so any help would be appreciated ladies thank you :)

Re: Diaper party? (Feeling dumb)

  • Usually they will have weight range on the box? No experience with diaper parties tho!
I'd say just get them to bring whatever- although some are gender specific- so if u know the gender maybe tell them?

  • My male co-worker had a "diapers & beer" party and he loved it! It sounds like it can be a fun way for the husband to celebrate the baby coming. As far as the diapers go, the size depends on the weight of the child. Like size Newborn are usually good for babies under 10 lbs, while size 1 is 8-14 lbs and so on. The weight limits are posted right on the box, underneath the size. I have been told by some of my friends who have had babies (I'm a FTM too) that they will go through the newborn ones pretty fast so maybe have the guys bring you some size 1's mainly?

    I hope this helped!

  • My husband had his diaper party last week. I had a bunch of guy-friendly food ready and beer. They watched football and played poker and each guy brought a pack of diapers. As far as sizes go, like PP said the weights are on the boxes. My little cousin who is 17 months wears a size 3 (I believe she is 22 lbs). One guy bought us a size 6!!!! I think a diaper party is a great way for daddy to feel special too! Good luck!

My son was in each size for about two boxes, if that makes sense? We were out of nb in a week, size 1 for a month, size 2 for a month, size 3 for 1.5 months, (my kid was a tank, 99%tile his whole first year,) but maybe ask for all sizes? 5 or 6 will be awhile, but maybe anything from 1-4. Can the guys get organized enough that you get 2-3 boxes if each size? :) Or ask if half bring diapers and half bring wipes? That way you don't have to worry about size, but you know you'll use them. Sounds like a cool idea!
  • Sizing is labeled on the boxes by weight as stated by PPs.

DS only wore NB for a week, size 1 for a month or 2. Size 2 for a couple months. Size 3 for 3-4 months.
And has been in size 4 since 11 months. (He is now 13 months and 21 lbs).
    He's tall and skinny.

The weights listed are guides, but not hard and fast rules for sizing.

    Ya know, like bras... I officially measure as a 32 A. But I can't breathe with a 32 on. I usually wear a 36.
  • These are pretty popular around here for guys. Kind of like a low key bachelor party of sorts. Sizes are by weight but are not an exact science. If your child is tall they will likely wear a bigger size, etc. what the guts typically do here is assign sizes, so joe buys size 1, Jim buys 2, etc. takes the guesswork out of it for the guys and face it....they are guys, they don't exactly get offended about this like women do! I'd say lots of 1's, 2's, 3's and only a small amount of NB would be good.
  • DH had a diaper party last month and it was great. I always felt bad that only moms get to celebrate at showers (and dad is left to pack the car) so we gave it a shot. We asked the guys to bring sizes 1-3 and it worked out fine. If you have a particular brand you want to use, mention that also. We didn't ask, but most of the guys included the receipts just in case we wanted to return or exchange them for another size.

  • I have not heard of this and it's cute! I think it's great your H wants his own party. :)
  • They outgrow NB really fast and size 1 almost as fast. I'd ask for 2 and 3, and then stock up on NB and size 1 yourself.

  • Thank you ladies for all the information, I am now exited that my DH will have his own dadchelor party :)
  • My 8 month old is in size 3... He's in the 50th percentile. My niece is little and wears a size 3 at 18 months. There's really no way to tell.
  • Around here they usually have a diaper keg party. My friends have gotten loads of diapers and still have some left over! A fun way for his friends to have a "shower" without it being unmanly lol.

What makes me sad is you say that tall babies use bigger sizes. DS is tall and has no hips/ass/anything around his middle to keep his diapers on.

Know how CD babies have fluffy bottoms? DS looks like he actually has one that is the right size with cloth!

People do diaper parties up here. I think it's an awesome idea :)

Agreed. Tall babies do not always need bigger sizes. I have a super tall, skinny baby (he will be one on Monday). He still wears size 3's. it's like how clothing retailers think that tall women are larger too. I am 5'10" and it's always been so hard for me to find clothes that fit!
  • I should have said tall 'could' wear a bigger size for the length and ability to hold more...not necessarily for belly. Dd is tall but a stick so she is no where near the weight listed on her size diapers. If I went by weight recommendations on the box, half of DD's bum would be hanging out of her diaper at the point! And she'd pee right through them! Not sure why it would make you sad @fbw, it wasn't the least bit offensive even with the incorrect wording. It just wasn't as accurate as using the word 'could' would have been.
  • My daughter always had to go up a size long before the weight. She has quite the bubble butt, combined with thighs. I love them but they made fit very difficult for a while.
  • @fbw I wish they made them by both height and pee volume also! Dd is in a 6 overnight diaper which is pretty much wrapped across her belly and half way to her back and it has started to not hold everything all night. They need to be more like tampons with light/regular/super absorbency for each size!! Maybe this is my ticket to be a millionaire...I can invent these types of diapers!
