TTC after 35

Considering an RE...

My apologies if I am breaking protocol, this is my first post since my intro about a month ago but I need some advice.  My husband and I have been ttc for a year now and I am starting to panic.  We do not have any children and were in grad school until a few years ago so we are starting life about ten years behind most of our friends.

My husband has pointed out that we have had some issues including timing (we have both traveled a lot for work) and I had some cervical scar tissue removed in October that my OB believes was part of the problem.  My cycle is regular, I know I am ovulating, and my husbands tests have all come back normal.  Because of all this, I am not sure if I should consult an RE just yet.  My main concern is that I am 36 and not getting any younger.  If I do make an appointment do I have to discuss it with my OB first?  I have no idea how to navigate all this.  Thank you in advance!

Re: Considering an RE...

  • I probably would if it's been a yr...I listened to the gals here and went to re...I skipped my ob called family doctor , she set the appt for me with re. I just told family dr I thought I was getting no where with ob...good luck!

  • I don't have any advice, just wanted to say hi and welcome (I missed your intro post).

Best wishes on your journey. I definitely think it's best to seek information and advice.

  • Hi - if you have been trying for 6 or more mos then your ob/gyn should definitely refer you to an RE (if you need a referral).

    Good luck!

  • @SuburbsMrs - I had no idea that a deficiency in vitamin D is not good for implantation.  Mine happens to be freakishly low.  I just found that out yesterday, but my OB did not make mention of that.  Interesting... and thanks for that piece of info.  I'm off to shove 6000 units down the hatch.  ;)

  • @IFinTN - yes, he mentioned that to me.  But then somehow he kept talking and the next thing I knew I was leaving with a bunch of prenatal samples, a B12 shot, a liver cleanse and probiotics. So this is a pill he can just call into pharmacy?  Thanks for the info!

  • Hi!. If you have been trying for 6+ months! go straight to an RE. Make sure to check to see if your insurance says you need a referral or not. If you do, have your OB do that right away.

  • OP, I say Yes, see an RE. I'm 42 and just called my ob about that last week-she referred me right away and the appt is in a few weeks! I would just call your ob-it was she who suggested it to me.
  • Hello all!

I'm 36 also and my husband and are TTC since last May. We've started the process of various testing through our respective doctors and nothing is coming back of any help so our OB recommended an RE. We got a referral through my primary care physician due to the requirements of my insurance and we are heading there tomorrow. I've had a few friends that have had similar troubles TTC and went to an RE. Both of them successfully conceived within 6 months - they both had different issues so we are hopeful. An RE really knows their field and will be able to suggest testing and things that others may not even think of.

We are going to the RE tomorrow for the first time. I'm awake so late because I'm excited yet nervous. Fingers crossed and good luck to you :-)
  • I would definitely keep my OB in the loop. Call and ask for a referral since it's been over 6 months. Also it's always a good idea to see a RE if you want to know any problems preventing pregnancy. Good Luck!
  • Welcome to the board :)

I would also seek the care of an RE, by getting a refferal.

    Best of luck!

  • The saying goes...OBGYNSs catch babies and REs  make them....  I would find the best RE in your area and don't hesitate to make an appointment.  You will get proper testing and a plan!

  • I'm not too pleased with my RE. Seams he's trying to convince us to do Ivf which is pricey. Then he suggested iui, what's a girl to do. I know time us not on my side but I want those procedures to be my final option. He did check my fsh levels, which are normal, my follicles look good too. I'm currently on 100mg clomid
  • Thank you for the replies everyone!  I checked with my insurance and actually have good coverage.  Unfortunately I have to go through their network or the cost essentially doubles, but I started researching their docs today and hopefully can get in soon!
  • @C_Girlie

not all RE's are created equal so if you don't like yours get a second opinion elsewhere.... that being said you don't have any siggy info so I don't know your stats, but most RE's dealing with women with AMA like all of us on this board are going to be more aggressive.  No matter what your numbers say we all still have older eggs and our situations are only getting worse by the day. That being said no one should push IVF there are other options and IUI is a great place to start.    good luck
