Breastfeeding

Overfeeding

My LO is 10 weeks old and I EBF. She is still nursing every 1 1/2-2 hours and will nurse for no less than 15 mins (it can go up to 1/2 hour). I give her the boob anytime she cries after the 1 1/2 hour mark and she never rejects it.

My issue is she is spitting up practically after every feeding. Sometimes it will be right when she burps and other times it will be an hour later and sometimes its right after she comes off and an hour later. I'm concerned that I am over feeding her if she is spitting up every time.   90% of the time, she will unlatch and try to re-latch several times after about 15 mins of eating. When I notice this after the 3rd or 4th time of her unlatching I will just pull her off and try to burp her. After 2-5 minutes of crying she will burp and spit (what is seems is all I just fed her) up and finally be content.

Does anyone have any insight on this? Should I just watch the clock and only nurse her for no less than 15 mins? Obviously I don't want to cut her off if she is still hungry but sometimes I am feeding her for so long and so often that I don't think its possible for her to still be hungry. (I know she is growing and probably going through a GS this week but this has been going on for at least 8 weeks now).

Re: Overfeeding

  • If she has been spitting up that much and that often for 8 weeks I'd say she has reflux.  The timeframe of 1.5-2hrs is totally normal though and will be for quite a while.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I agree with PPs, I'd head to the Dr. to ask about reflux.
  • I don't know about reflux but you could try burping her more frequently. I have a forceful letdown so my son would spit up a lot. I would stop him every few minutes to burp and it seemed to help. I wouldn't cut her off. Even if she's not hungry she obviously wants the extra cuddles from mommy. Don't take that away from her.
  • Thanks. I should have mentioned that she does have reflux and has been on Zantac for 6 weeks. I didn't realize that this could possibly be reflux. Maybe the Zantac isn't working??

Zantac is meant to make reflux less painful, not take away the spitting up.
  • DS was on Zantac from 3 weeks until about 8.5 months when we saw a significant drop in spit up.  Every so often (probably your scheduled well visits) dosage based on LOs weight should be evaluated, as you will need to increase dose as she grows, but as long as she is gaining and doesn't seem to be in pain it is working,

  • You cannot over feed when EBF. It is probably reflux. I did not want to do meds so I started feeding one side at each feeding instead of both I order to reign in my supply. I fed her in as upright a position as possible. I unlatched if I was experiencing OALD and squeezed it out a little before giving it back to her. Doing all of this cut down on the gas and heartburn pain and she spat up less even though she didn't completely stop. She mostly had to outgrow it.

  • Feed in an upright position, burp frequently (I burp LO every 2-5 mins), completely drain one breast before moving to the next (get more hindmilk), keep upright for 20-30 minutes after each feed.  If you're engorged in the a.m., pump some to decrease foremilk before offering breast to LO.  And PP's suggestion to reevaluate dosage of Zantac is a good idea.

On really pukey days I will offer small, more frequent feeds (ex. 15 minute feeds once an hour) and that seems to help get the spitting up back under control.  Especially in the a.m. when I have too much foremilk.  As a reference point, it takes DS about 40 minutes to get a really full feed in.  Might be something to try on really bad days.
