Miralax long term??

my son will be 2 this month and has been having poop issues. He either has little sharts or huge turds, and has a rash and hates to be wiped. Dr. RX'd an enema and miralax. She wants him to take it for about 6 months.(!!) I am not sure how safe this is or how I feel about it! I am going to do some extensive research about it, but I thought I would throw it out to you mommies and daddies too! What are your thoughts on the extended use of miralax? thanks!!

We cured my DDs chronic constipation with kefir and flaxseed smoothies. I would try something like that over miralax personally.

We had similar issues with Eleanor.  The pedi also suggested Miralax but I didn't feel comfortable using it long term - we did use it for a while because we were pretty desperate for her to get some relief!  Probiotics and flax in oatmeal seem to have fixed things long term.  And getting her to drink more water.  If you do dairy at all, I'd also consider cutting that out or at least back.

Lurker here but thought I would add...Miralax is supposed to be gentle it is not a stimulant laxative. I personally  take it every day and have for over two years. All it does is absorb water into the intestines to make the poop softer. I agree with previous posters though I would try everything before trying it long term on my child but it is probably the mildest thing to help them. I have friends who are doctors and have been known to even put it in their babies' bottles!!

My DS (2yo) also has frequent bouts of constipation. Do you know what particular food sensitivities to be on the lookout for?

I've attributed his constipation to him not drinking enough water or taking in enough high-fiber foods. We've been working on breakfast smoothies with activia.
