TTC after 35

On the pill, late, with negative pregnancy tests...need advise

My husband and I want to start a family soon, but haven't officially started trying yet as we just got married 2 1/2 months ago. I am on the pill. On 11/30 I had breakthrough bleeding 5 days before my placebo week. I took my first placebo pill on 12/4 and by that time I only had minimal spotting. I had a normal "period", but it just came 5 days early. Bleeding 1-2 days before placebo week is pretty much normal for me. My dr has said it's ok since this pill is probably the 5th one I have tried over the last 3-4 years. Others I had bleeding mid way through pill pack. I have been on this pill for about 9 months. I continued taking my pills each day as I normally would. If you go by the date that I started my "period" last month I should have started on 12/27, but I took the first placebo pill on 1/1. I still do not have a period or any sign of one, no cramps or moodiness like usual. I took a pregnancy test on 12/31 and this morning and both were negative. Last night I had really weird CM that was yellowish with a brown dot. It looked like snot. No smell or anything. I have been very nauseous lately and had mild breast tenderness off and on, but not sure if this us my mind wanting to be pregnant and tricking my body. It has been 37 days since my last period and my average is 27 days. I have been tracking my periods for 3 plus years and have never gone this long without while on the pill. I called my doctors office yesterday and they said to call back late next week if I still don't have a period or a positive test. Has anyone gone through something similar? Could I be pregnant? Could I be premenopausal? I am 36. I am hoping I am pregnant yet worried something could be wrong if I am not and could really use some advise. Is this normal?

Re: On the pill, late, with negative pregnancy tests...need advise

  • sorry no advice as I have never been on bc pills.... your doctors advice is pretty much what you will hear on this board.... test every few days with first morning urine on a pink dye test and call your doctor late next week if still no period and/or pos test.

I wouldn't read into symptoms.... hormones love to mess with our minds.  When we start obsessing about them they become even more exaggerated.

  • Hi there - I was also on the pill for over ten years and am 36.  When I got married I was so stressed about the wedding my body "broke through" the pill and did its own thing for three months.  It came twice very close together and then not at all for almost two months.  I stopped it and restarted it after the wedding and it was all fine.  I was never pregnant and my doctor told me that it was all stress related.  So its completely possible that you are not pregnant.

However you should probably get to the doctor for some testing if you're worried.  I have to imagine excess worry isn't good for either the baby or for getting AF?

Also - a friendly word of unsolicited advice - I've been going through a bit of hell coming off the pill and formally trying now.  I've inexplicably gained ten pounds, lost a bunch of hair (now growing back), grew some in not okay places (now going away thank god), folliculitis, etc. etc. I highly recommend going off the pill ASAP even if you're not planning on a baby for a year or so.  I wish my doctors had been a little pushier with me re: the side effects of coming off and to do it sooner to clean out your body.

    Good luck either way!

  • My advice is to see your doctor and ask for a beta (blood pregnancy) test. That will be the most accurate result to tell whether you're pregnant or not. Good luck!
