BF after previous abcess

When my son was about 2 months old I had mastitis and the antibiotic didn't work and it developed into an abcess that had to be surgically drained. I switched to formula at that point because nursing or pumping with an open wound on my breast seemed like one of the worst things I could imagine. I am due in May with #2 and am hoping to bf and hoping it goes more smoothly this time around. I am worried about the abcess issue causing supply issues on that side. I'm also worried (probably not logical) that it might be painful because of it. Does anybody have any experience or know anything about this?

I had an abscess that was surgically drained when DS was 9 weeks old. While I did (and have) supply issues, I am still BF'ing at 11 months, and supplementing as needed. Also - I nursed him on the side with the abscess and open wound. I couldn't pump due to the flange hitting, but otherwise it was fine. From talking with doctors and doing other research, you should be able to BF without issue. I also recommend taking soy lechithin daily, it's supposed to help with clogged ducts so they don't lead to mastisis.
