Decreasing nursing for 1 year old

DS just turned one and I am still EBF and truly love it, but since he is eating 3 full meals a day with a snack he doesn't nurse much during the day I am considering switching to only nursing him in the morning and at night.  I am a little worried about my supply going down because of this.  Are there any of you who have decreased how much your LO is nursing and still kept a good supply?  I work during the day and now only pump once a day so I'm thinking I could stop this as well which would be nice.  DS doesn't really show any signs of wanting to wean completely so I just need some advice for possibly decreasing the amount I nurse.  Thanks!

Re: Decreasing nursing for 1 year old

  • you should be fine. i had the same concern about supply when I stopped pumping. I stopped pumping at work when DS was 14 months and i am continuing to nurse with no problems (DS is now 16 1/2 months). i was down to one pumping session a day when I stopped. i am still nursing him in the morning and twice in the evening on work days and on demand on weekends/holidays.

  • I SAH and I was weaning DS slowly since he was 10m. At 10m I dropped him from 6x/day to 5x/d, then down to 4x/d at 11m.  A week after he turned 1, I dropped him to 3x/day.  He will be 14m next week and I just dropped him to 2x/day.  FWIW, my supply dropped a little at 11.5m, but then stabilized after a week or 2.

I just got my first pp period this week, and I definitely notice a supply dip.  But since my goal is to continue to wean him, it's okay.
