Fever and nothing else

DS2 has been running a fever the last couple of days...around 101. Of course it goes down with ibuprofen and yesterday I guess we kept up with it pretty well in the ibuprofen that it never spiked back up. This morning he was hot again so it hasn't gone away. He has no other symptoms and I know he's getting ready to cut teeth as his gums are swollen and he's rubbing his gums.  Should I wait a couple of more days of a fever before I call the Dr?

Re: Fever and nothing else

  • @RVASC811 That's what I figured. Thankfully it hasn't gone over 102. I'm hoping today's the last day of this. Yesterday he was a nightmare...poor baby.

  • I would let it be for 3 days. I would also stop ibuprofen except right before bed. Let the fever fight the germs.

  • DD had a fever with no symptoms, the first day it was 103 then next day 102 then 3rd day 101.  I brought her in and they checked her ears and throat which were clear and they said they get concerned at over 5 days so bring her in if it was longer than that, it was likely a virus.  By day 5 she was fever free.
  • We are in the same boat except the fever is coming back off and on and isn't as high every time. Henry is sleeping miserably, seems moody during the day, chews on his hands, and drools like crazy, so it's got to be his teeth. He's never acted like this when teething before, maybe it's molars? I don't know, but I haven't been too worried (so far). Hope your LO's fever clears up soon! I know it's a stressful time!

This is what happened to us with molars. But then the fever kept getting higher and we had to keep him on tylenol and ibproufen for three days, Finally on day three we found out it was molars and an ear infection.
  • Emma had a fever with no other symptoms in the beginning of November. I waited and took her to her regular check up 3 days later, turned out to be a nasty double ear infection.

  • @Sillygirl85, Henry's fever spiked at 101 originally but hasn't gotten that high since -- when he feels warm now, his temp is usually around 99.  What are other signs of an ear infection?

They say ear tugging is a sign since they can't exactly tell us yet, but more so a fever of 102 and higher. I've checked DS2's ears for redness or anything and there's nothing. He was super fussy yesterday, but he was constipated. Once he pooped this morning, my happy baby returned. Come Monday if he still has his fever, then I'll call the Dr.

  • When I took Alice in to get her ears checked a few months ago, Doc said fevers caused by bacteria tend to spike and stay high, even with tylenol.  Virus or other such things tend to go down with OTC meds, and that's all she (Doc) would be able to do for it anyway.  So as long as it is coming down with meds, I probably wouldn't worry about it until day 5 or so.

@Ziegefecker The bold above is another indicator also redness of the ear. Of course it they are fussing and crying it might be hard to tell if the ear is inflammed or just red from crying. If his temp is at 99 it could just be teething.
