Pumping while DH feeds LO at night

LO is 2 months old, but only 3 weeks age adjusted, and we feed him about every three hours at night. I BF him at around 9 pm and then go to sleep, then DH gives him a bottle of BM from my (huge) stash at around midnight so I can get a break. However, I always wake up around that time to pump because I don't want to hurt my supply. This may seem like a dumb question, but if I pump at about 10:00, as opposed to midnight, and then sleep until 3 am when LO is due to eat again, will that hurt my supply? Is 5 hours too long for me to wait to feed/pump, or does it not matter just as long as I pump at any time for each missed feeding? It would be nice to get sleep in longer than a 3 hour increment!

Re: Pumping while DH feeds LO at night

  • This is just my opinion, but if you have a, as you say, 'huge stash', then I would not worry about the midnight pumping. Your son will not always be awake at 9pm, midnight, 3am, and if he's already 2 months old, then it seems like it won't be much longer until he will sleep longer stretches at night & not be awake every three/four hours. IMO your supply won't be materially damaged if you sleep through the midnight feeding instead of pumping.

  • I know that this is a really late response, but I thought it might be useful to you, OP. I am incredibly, incredibly lucky and my LO started to STTN basically at 2 months. He'd go 6-8 hours, so I went that long without nursing. I never had a supply issue.

I think a lot of it just depends on your body type - I haven't weaned yet, by my mom tells me that she had milk for a loong time after she stopped BFing me (I think that we're talking about months).
  • That's what I do sometimes.  It hasn't hurt my supply, I am just really full by the next feeding
