Drinking from a cup

How are your LOs doing with cups. We have tried regular and straw sippy cups with DD. She plays around with them, but isn't actually drinking a lot. Spits a lot of the water out. Cant seem to get anything out of the sippy if it has the stopper in, and doesn't understand that she can't tip the straw cup back even though she can get water from it. I don't know if I'm not trying hard enough, or if I'm just being impatient! Just can't imagine having her drink milk out of a cup any time soon. Since we are expecting #2 in Apirl, would really love to get her off the bottle as close to one year as possible!

Re: Drinking from a cup

  • My lo will drink from a sippy if I hold it for him. If I set it in front of him he just plays with it. I haven't tried a straw cup yet.

  • DD doesn't have any sippys but we are planning to get her some of those sippy covers that go over the bottles that we already have. She has drank from sippys at the homes of relatives.

She is pretty good with a sippy and she can drink okay from a regular cup if I am helping her. She is like an alien trying to figure out the straw and I have tried all kinds of tricks to get her to get the idea.

  • DS hasn't figured out straws, though he likes chewing on them.

He can use his sippy cup if we tip it for him, but mostly just bangs it against his high chair tray.

We have the most success with regular cups. He hasn't quite figured them out, likes to smack his bottom lip rather than his top, but he manages to drink most of what we give him that way.

  • We skipped sippy cups and went straight to straw cups and actually gave it to her starting at 4 months because she refused bottles and we were hoping she'd take on the straw cup because we had nursing issues at the time too. It actually took her a couple of times and then she really liked the straw cup.
By 6 months she'd just grab it on her own and drink from it.
It depends on her mood how much she drinks from it each day. We give her water with meals, some days she sips, some days she gulps..

I'd recommend to just skip the sippy cup and go with the straw cup and have it around all day. The more exposure the better. You'll LO will get the hang of it don't worry.
  • We are using soft spout sippy cups. Nuk makes a great transitional soft spout and it really helped.
  • We also skipped sippy cups and went straight to straw ones. My LO sometimes holds it and sometimes I have to hold it for him to drink out of it. He has been drinking out of straws for a while though and when we go out he drinks out of the big glass with a straw
  • We started offering her a sippy cup around 6 months when we introduced solids.  We use a soft spouted one too, one of the no spill ones.  It did take her a while to figure it out, but we just let her play with it and practice until she eventually got it.  I just got her a straw cup, but she hasn't' figured that out at all yet.  I am just going to continue giving it to her until she gets it, same as we did with the regular sippy.  We let her drink out of a normal open cup as well, but she needs assistance holding it and tends to make a mess so we don't make that the norm. :)

My advice is to just let LO practice and eventually they'll get the hang of it!

  • Our DCP tried a sippy cup with him this week and went back to bottles because he just threw it or dumped it out. We give him water in a straw cup at home. He gets water out but doesn't swallow it, just spits all over his tray or shirt. That's actually an improvement, he never used to get water using the straw and just threw the cup around or chewed on the straw. Just keep trying with your LO, she'll get it eventually.
  • My LO does drink from a sippy cup occasionally. I think it's due to 2 reasons; he likes to imitate his sister and he has been using the NUK soft spout sippy shaped bottle since 6 months.

DS has a Munchkin soft spout sippy near him all day long and when he doesn't use it for teething relief, he's pretty good at tipping it enough to get water. Any other sippy gets banged on the floor/tray and thrown across the room. He never got the hold of straws. Still doesn't hold his milk bottle himself. But don't you dare take his sippy away for a second...

  • DS only drinks from an open cup at daycare (with lots of help and guidance, of course). He refused a bottle and isn't a fan of sippy cup lids.

  • Dd has been using sippy cups since she was about 5 mo. Two months ago we switched to the handle less ones. Hasn't got the hang of the straw cups yet.

  • DS hasn't gotten the hang of cups yet, he mostly plays with them :/
  • she does not get the idea as of yet.  She loves playing with them but doesn't get how to use them.  I have a couple of different ones but no luck yet.  I tried an open cup the other day and all she did was lick the water and tried turning it over.  She doesn't like holding her bottles either.  She knows how but likes someone to do it for her

  • My LO has the same issue, I have tried several cups but no luck.  He will drink my water when I give him a sip but he has no interest in the cup.  I hope it clicks soon.
  • My dd will be 10 months in a few days. She has been drinking out of the soft nuk sippy cups and straw cups for a few months now. She also can hold and drink out of a regular cup however I have to keep a hold of it so she doesn't dump it all on her face. At first she just chewed on the sippy cups and didn't understand the straws but after working with her she finally got it down! The first time she drank out of a straw and really sucked was with a Capri sun. I think it's because the straw is so small and it doesn't take as much work as the big straws. Also because it's juice! So maybe try a little straw so you LO understands that sucking on the straw will get him or her something to drink. Unfortunately my little one will only drink formula from a bottle before naps/bed so we have a ways to go before getting rid of bottles!
