Naps

I know we have been really lucky so far but DD has decided to change it up. She's been in her big girl bed for about 6 months now and never had any transition issues. Now when we put her down for her nap she kicks the head boards/side rails, sits up, pulls at her socks, etc. she refuses to sleep in there but will nap in the car still. We have no problems with over night sleep. Please tell me she isn't giving up naps :). How are other Dec kiddos doing with naps??

Re: Naps

  • DS is still in his crib, but nap time has become something of an issue. Some days he's pretty tired and still takes a nap with no problem. Other days he'll talk to his stuffed animals until he gets bored and starts throwing a fuss. It's a day to day thing, but I still make sure to put him down for at least some quiet time every day. I really hope he's not going to give them up entirely any time soon. With baby #2 arriving in just a couple short weeks this Mama NEEDS her little boy to take a daily nap!

  • DD boycotts her nap at least 1-2x a week. I still make her stay in there 30-60 min depending on how loud her protesting is. She is still in her crib.

  • We have to do 1 of 2 things to get DD2 to sleep at naptime. She will falls asleep in the car and then we can transfer her to her bed, which means planning activities that coincide with coming home around naptime. Or she'll fall asleep if one of us lays down next to her for 10-15 minutes. I don't consider either of these methods to be ideal, but she is nowhere near ready to give up her nap and if left on her own she will play in her room.

C loves naps, he runs to bed when he's tired. Once in awhile he will try to refuse, but after a certain amount of time I just put him in his room with the baby gate at the door and he will cry at it for a few minutes, but then will always go nap. He has never went a full day without at least a short nap.

DD is like this to and she will lay in her room for hours if I let her she just won't nap. Last night we left the house at 5 and she was out in her car seat. I can tell she's exhausted and still needs the nap. Maybe I will try some rocking and book reading before naps to get her nice and sleepy :)

  • DS still takes and NEEDS a 1.5-2.5 hour nap every day. He usually doesn't protest much if he's at home or daycare, but if we are out (unless in the car) he will never nap. If we go out during nap time and he takes a 10 minute nap in the car, then that is it.  He wont go back down, and he'll be a totally crank butt for the rest of the day.

  • DS still takes a 1.5-2 hour nap each day. He has to have those naps. If we are out and about we try to give him at least a 30-45 min nap in the car and that is it for the day. You can tell on those days though that he didn't get a full nap is often more cranky in the evening. We don't let this happen very often.

DS still takes one nap lasting at least an hour. There are times if we're out, it will be much shorter, but it's not a good day if that happens. Hoping he hangs onto naps for a long, long time!
  • DS absolutely still needs a nap. 1.5-2 hours is best. The days he gets an hour or less are terrible in general, but luckily they are few and far between. I agree with the pp about a routine. It really works for him, even if he initially throws a mini-fit.

  • Alex still naps most days, too. Every now and then he has a day where he just refuses, but even then I let him play/lay/read in his crib for an hour or 2, depending on how he handles it.

The son of a friend of mine was done with naps by age 2 though, I keep hoping that Alex will still nap until he's at least 4!

  • We do the whole lunch, wash up, diaper change routine and she will say night night now after. Maybe if I add the rocking/book reading it will add some calm into the routine. Thanks ladies! I agree, I hope she continues napping for a while longer :)

  • DD still naps in her crib, I hope she is like her cousins. They all napped till they were 6 if they were home

  • DS still naps, although, about once a week we have a nap fail, and he's fine the whole day.  Well, as "fine" as a toddler can be.

Random side note, we were having dinner at a restaurant and I mentioned to the waiter that DS had refused his nap.  He replied, "Oh, I know how that is, my daughter is a mess if she doesn't nap."  I asked him how old his daughter was and he said she was six.  <---I'm thinking that's the exception, not the rule.
  • So, question... for those of you who have shorter naps (like an hour), how much sleep do your LOs get at night?

I'm curious as well. DS sleeps anywhere from 1 to 2 hours and sleeps about 11 hours at night.
  • I would be so happy if DD napped till 6!! Our nap strike seems to be nearing an end, she went down all weekend just fine and yesterday too... Fingers crossed!

Normally naps were about 2 hours in between 12-3pm. Overnight sleep is generally 8pm-7am. Things have never got back on track from daylight savings.

  • My DS won't sleep any longer than 9 hours overnight... and then will take a 2 hour nap.  But if he sleeps longer overnight, then he short naps himself.

He averages about 11 hours sleep in 24 hour period.  Too little, the experts claim.  Unless he's in a growth spurt (like now, for example), then he'll sleep longer.
